The instructions include the following guidance for battery installation: Insert a tool or other object (not included) into hole in top of battery cover to depress tab. While depressing tab, slide battery door open. After inserting batteries, slide door closed until it clicks into place.

Many other Nerf battery compartments are opened using a screwdriver, but for this one you will need a tool or other object such as a pen that can fit in the small hole near the battery cover. Insert the tool into the hole next to the battery cover to depress the release tab. While depressing the tab, slide the battery door open.
