Q: Is this shelf free-standing, or does it need to be bolted to the walls?

A: It's designed to be screwed into the wall. I didn't do it. The weight of the shelf plus books are heavy enough to keep it in place. I've had mine for a week and it's doing just fine. The prior ladder shelves that I had before purchasing this one, I also let it lean without securing it and it was fine for the last 10 years.

A: Mine are veneer but they are really nice. They do not look cheesy. I have the lighter ash color.

I can't remember if it came with screws...I think it did, because ours are black. It is a great bookcase. I use it in the kitchen with cookbooks, cookie jar and knick-knacks on it.

I bought this shelf because I loved the style and it had good reviews, like 4.5 stars. When I was putting it together I almost had to force the screws in because they didn't want to go in or I would get the screw halfway in the shelf board and it would not go in any further. When this happened the first time I thought it was just a default, but when it happened a second time it has to be the design or how the company is putting the pieces together.

The shelf was easy to assemble BUT two of the shelves had unsightly scratches. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the damage until after I put the unit together. I should have known to look before assembling because something similar happened when I purchased the desk in this line a few years ago. I also wish there was another shelf on top instead of all the empty metal. If the unit was not scratched, I would have increased my review to 4.5 stars. I’m trying to decide if I can live with the scratches. For $150, I feel the shelf’s should arrive in good condition.

Easy to assemble. Got gray but color is darker than pictured. Doesn’t look like it’s available in that color anymore though. Wished I would have paid attention to the adjustable feet before anchoring to wall though. Had at lowest position and would have screwed higher if I’d realized.

We got the gray because it was on sale and we really needed extra book storage. Definitely wasn’t our first choice of color, but upon putting it together it’s a perfect neutral, we actually like it. We anchored it to the wall - it feels sturdy yet is relatively low profile. Took my boyfriend about half an hour to put it together by himself. We love it!

Really like the look of this shelf. But it’s not very sturdy especially on wood flooring. So we decided to use on carpet in our office area. Also, the bottom shelves don’t fit flushed with the wall. Probably just got a defected one.

I was hesitant to order this because of some negative reviews, but I'm very happy with this leaning bookcase! All pieces were in good shape and labeled (bought walnut) and put it together in less than 30 minutes. I don't have any really heavy items on it so I can't comment on that but overall it's a perfect price for what I wanted.

Ignore the paint, still in the process of fixing things. But I love this shelf!! It was SO easy to put together & I was skeptical after seeing a few reviews saying it was uneven but mine seemed to be perfect & no issues. The wood is also very nice quality and does not feel cheap.

I bought this shelf as a cheap alternative to a shelf from Crate & Barrel or West Elm. It's great for the price point. Please note that it's nothing fancy, but if you're looking for a decent-looking shelf that can display things, it will fit your needs perfectly. Just bought a second one!

Absolute junk. Fourteen screws were required for assembly...on 13 were in the package. The two drywall anchors that came with did not match with the screws provided (holes much too small in anchors) to secure the unit to the wall. The end result is that I've got two 1/4 inch holes in my drywall and the unit still isn't fastened to the wall. I regret my purchase.

The item came damaged and trying to get a replacement for the damaged shelves is pretty difficult. They said I could return the item for a new one, but being able to return such a large item without a box doesn’t work. Such a hassle and it’s frustrating to now have a broken item.

This feels and looks cheap. We originally had a nicer one in my kids room but decided to replace it with a white one. I totally regret this purchase because it looks incredibly cheap and isn’t very sturdy once you build it. The slabs of wood are way too heavy for the frail, thin metal rods. Waste of money. Buy one from an actual furniture store instead.

It’s really a beautiful bookcase! I really loved the height of it and the wood seems very sturdy. The black frames didn’t align ENTIRELY but it’s hardly noticeable, just makes leveling it when putting it up a little more difficult. Assembling was really simple!

The shelf came promptly and looks exactly like it does in the pictures! I’m super happy with it and it looks so good in my space. The only trouble I had was some of the screws were a bit hard to get in so I used some more muscle than I needed but overall a really great shelf, looks amazing, and a good bang for your buck!
