A New Go-To Cookbook
I’m always excited when I come across a cookbook that’s designed to truly inspire—one that encourages experimentation and becomes a go-to in the kitchen. Maxi’s Kitchen by food blogger and culinary creator Maxine Sharf is exactly that kind of book. In fact, Maxine writes that her hope is for it to become dog-eared, stained, filled with handwritten notes, and well-loved. Inspired by her family’s rich culinary traditions, the book is filled with interesting and delicious recipes, many passed down through generations and shaped by different home countries before finding their way into Maxine’s kitchen. What makes the book especially engaging is how the recipes are organized by days of the week, each reflecting a different “food mood.” Monday eases you in with simple recipes; Tuesday focuses on one-pot (or pan, or wok) meals; Wednesday offers fun midweek lifts; Thursday steps things up with more involved cooking; Friday is all about small plates to share; Saturday invites you to spend time cooking; and Sunday is reserved for brunch. I found myself drawn to this rhythm, often flipping to a chapter based on how I was feeling rather than what I had planned. There are also sections on pantry staples, kitchen tools, and a useful chart on seasoning to taste. I’ve already tried a few recipes: Vietnamese Caramel Chicken Thighs—delicious, quick, and perfect for starting the week; Teriyaki Chicken Meatball Bowls for a comforting midweek meal; and Creamy Lemon Spinach and Ricotta Stuffed Shells, which felt just right for entertaining. The recipes are approachable, with ingredients that are easy to find and instructions that are clear to follow. There are so many dishes in this book I’m excited to try, and it’s one I think I’ll return to again and again. Maxine’s hope for this book to become a well-loved, dog-eared cookbook may very well come true. Clarkson Potter provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own.
