Q: Is the the Caterpillar Xylophone that has frustration free packaging or is this the standard edition one?

A:Â Hi Nick, The Caterpillar Xylophone comes in standard packaging. Your Friends at Melissa & Doug

Q: Why are the heads of the mallets not rounded. it would seem to me that a round head would make a better tone and if a sibling decided to hit the other on the head, a round mallet would hurt less.

It’s super cute but the red paint is chipping off the sticks and now I can’t have my daughter play with it until I find sticks somehow. Just chipped all over right when we started playing it. So bummed.

The toy is cute and simple. It comes with a cute little card on how to play a couple songs however that card can get lost quickly. Wish there was a better way to store it on the item so it wouldn’t get lost. Good price point.

Flat C. It’s so flat I cringe. I love the design it’s very cute but not function or quality. Also, after less than a week one of the mallets chipped at the base and we had to throw it out.

Was super excited for my nephew to play around with this, but the E and F notes were both completely out of tune (at different intervals too). I wish there was some way to fix it or tune it up as it has already been opened! The toy itself is beautifully crafted otherwise

Aesthetically, the caterpillar is colorful, fun and the mallet/antennae are a great design aspect of the toy. I went on a reputable music/orchestra website that listed 10 of the best music toys for babies and toddlers. I also YouTubed this product to see "out of the box" reviews and all of the notes were in tune in the video. C= sometimes sounds like C# depending on which part of the mallet you hit the key with. D= sounds like C# E= sounds like D I LOVE the look of the xylophone though, it's one of the best designs I have searched. BUT, I'm not giving this to my nephew because it is out of tune. I also tried hitting the notes with different parts of the mallet but the "D" and "E" are still awful. :-(

Much better than her big brother's xylophone from band. She misplaces the "antenna" but any stick or tool works. Her siblings like showing her how to play the songs that are included.

I was so disappointed to hear that the bars were out of tune. How can one learn the scale when the notes are out of order? Usually M & D toys are the best, but this one was a fail.

As another review says, two of the plates are seriously out of key. On the one I got the low C is pretty much exactly half-step flat, making it a B, and the low D is a quarter-step flat, making it sound really weird and annoying. Others are off too, but tolerable. Also, one of the hammers on mine was warped.
Design-wise this is an awesome toy - it is colorful and it cleverly makes the hammers be the antennae of the caterpillar. Unfortunately, if you are musically inclined this will annoy you.
If you just want your kid to be able to make noise with it - it will work for you :)
