Description

This colorful xylophone is a child's ideal first introduction to music! With mallets in hand, children can explore simple music concepts through creative play, becoming familiar with an octave, intervals, and rhythms. Over time, this little caterpillar will help children develop an appreciation for sound and music! The nifty wooden mallets store neatly in the xylophone itself to look like the caterpillar's antennae.

Our caterpillar xylophone musical toy can be used with parents and older children with multiple entertaining and educational ways to play. Parents can ask the child to play all of the notes in order and tell them which are higher or ask the child to read the letters at the bottom of each key (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C). They can also explain that these are the notes of a scale (specifically, C major). The Melissa & Doug Caterpillar Xylophone is an exceptional gift for kids 3 to 6 years of age. Add the Melissa & Doug Wooden Beginner Recorder to round out the hands-on, screen-free play experience.

For more than 30 years, Melissa & Doug has created beautifully designed imagination- and creativity-sparking products that NBC News called “the gold standard in early childhood play.” We design every toy to the highest quality standards, and to nurture minds and hearts. If your child is not inspired, give us a call and we'll make it right. Our phone number is on every product!

As another review says, two of the plates are seriously out of key. On the one I got the low C is pretty much exactly half-step flat, making it a B, and the low D is a quarter-step flat, making it sound really weird and annoying. Others are off too, but tolerable. Also, one of the hammers on mine was warped. Design-wise this is an awesome toy - it is colorful and it cleverly makes the hammers be the antennae of the caterpillar. Unfortunately, if you are musically inclined this will annoy you. If you just want your kid to be able to make noise with it - it will work for you :)

My 3.5 year old and 15 month old both love it! My older child tries to carry a tune, while my little one likes to bang on it and mimick the elder sibling. It is well made, but the red paint from the drum stick does come off on the xylophone and it's hard to clean off. But I love how much the kids enjoy it, and would recommend this toy.

The caterpillar xylophone looks so cute, but the sound that resinates when you hit the keys with the mallet is not a nice clear tone.

Song book isn't exactly a book!

Toy is really cute and well made but only has 2 songs to learn to play. Really should come with a small music book (8 to 10 songs). Does't take very long to get bored with "Mary had a little Lamb" and "Row, row, row your Boat"
