Book Synopsis

Cleverly drawn in a lucid prose style, the history of Cephan the horseman and his familiars, the hound Khan, the falcon Phaedra and a mule called Mule. Back to the ancient city of Sirika they bring the king's long lost stallion, the fabled Messiah, in a time of turmoil where according to tradition the king's successor is chosen by the priests and the multitude from a contender of the Chosen, the descendants of the city's founder.

At the same time an Chinese army led by the envoy Zhang Qian is approaching to take Sirika.

In a web of plotting, intrigue and violence Cephan tries to school Messiah for the king's son Mylon but instead Mylon flees the city and is captured by the Chinese envoy. What follows then is a king's choice between his unloved son and the stallion he worships and the price of his decision. In the doomed city Messiah becomes part of the bargain for Sirika's deliverence, but finally his fate is determined by the horseman.
