Newair 45 lbs. Nugget Countertop Ice Maker with Self Cleaning Function in Stainless Steel

In the epic span of 1.5 years, I've had not one, not two, but FIVE of these marvels of modern malfunction (NEWAIR: AI-420SS). It's almost as if they were testing this product on me. I would have happily helped troubleshoot this s-storm of a product, but Newair said, No, just throw it away, we'll send you a new one. Great, I thought, certainly, the next one will work. Nope. Each unit died with a dreadful "death screech." From a brief few days to a generous six months, each one bowed out in a similarly screaming fashion. Newair, with the optimism of a parent who believes in their troublemaking child, kept replacing them...until yesterday, when number five shrieked its swan song. Newair decided, apparently, No more! Let the customer suffer in silence...or in screeches. They offered 40% off another one—ha, what a silly suggestion. I offered for them to send me a replacement ice maker at no charge, but they declined. So, instead, I write this review.

Worked great for 12 days! Been dealing w/ support. 28 emails. Sent all the info/pics/video. Didn't cut the cord correctly. Took our machine to the dump & bam. They aren't replacing. Beware of Charles!

I purchased the 30 lb nugget ice unit and it caught on fire at the 13th month, after getting hot and smelling weird for a few weeks prior. They replaced it with this model on February 22nd, its July 23rd and the new machine has stopped working. Because it was a warranty replacement, they will not issue another replacement but will offer a 40% discount. Why do I want a discount for something that will breakdown? I ONLY used bottled distilled water in the machine and cleaned it every 2 weeks. Over the last 2 months I started noticing black water in the tank and black slime in the ice basket. I think there may be a malfunction with the filter. Ran the cleaning cycle 4 times this morning and black chunks kept coming out of the drain tube and now it won't make ice. Don't waste your money on this machine!!

This was originally a warranty replacement after a different ice maker we had gone out within 8 months. That machine was discontinued so this was the only option. Now in about the same amount of time as the last machine, this machine is no longer making ice. You can see some ice crystals at the top but no water will run through the machine. We called customer service but they stated that since this was a warranty replacement they will not replace it. We spent over $400 on the original ice machine and now we will stay far away from Newair.

I bought this for wife has a birthday present two months ago because she loves nugget ice. I have had two replacement units sent to me. I will say their customer support has been great, but I fear the manufacturer they use for these units has some serious issues. Here is the breakdown of my units, First Unit: Seemed great at first. It made wonderful nugget ice. After about a week, it began making a loud squealing sound for a few seconds. No big deal, I can live with a few seconds of squealing. Then the squeal go louder and lasted longer. I finally contact support when it was lasting 45 seconds. The sent a new unit. Second Unit: When I opened, I saw two pieces of black plastic sitting in the bottom. Clearly something inside broken. I plugged it in to use it anyway and it would not suck at water out of the tank. I unplugged for about three hours and tried again, and it seemed okay at first. Then I noticed a lot of condensation building up at the ice exporting area, and the ice began to just come out as a slush instead of nugget ice. Then it began squealing. I called support and they sent another unit. Oddly, the day the new unit arrived, the second unit began squealing and kept squealing for about 4 minutes until I unplugged it. Third and current unit: From the first time using it, the "Ice Full" light will come on when the ice basket is half full and there is no ice jammed in the top. When this happens, the compressor turns off so it can thaw which means my ice starts melting. We basically just have to constantly watch the unit to press the power button again when Ice Full light comes on. This also mean we get mostly slush and not nugget ice. At least we don't have a squeal though, yet! We thought about just trying to get a refund, but it looks like all of the other brands have similar quality issues. We decided to just keep this third unit since it is not squealing and makes okay ice if we stay on top of pressing the power button. It's just hard to believe a product could have so many manufacturing issues. I've never experienced anything like this with another product. I love the ice when it works, but I have absolutely no faith in the product now. At least customer support is good though.

I got this ice maker as a replacement for a nugget maker that lasted 11 months. This one lasted 3 months. Since the warranty is now out the only thing they said they would do is give me a 40 percent discount on another one. Worked great until it didn't. I wouldn't recommend unless u just expect it to not last. They will replace within the 1st year but you still have to pay shipping and tax. Buyer beware!

These make great ice when they work. This is the second unit within a year; we use filtered water as well as clean the unit on a regular basis using a mild cleaner. Grateful to have the warranty, but these units do not hold up. Don't know if it is just a product of these countertop units or if it is just this brand.

It makes the ice in the shape I was looking for. When it make ice though it is on the loud side.

Bought this during a Black Friday sale. Easy to set up. Made ice like a dream for the first 10 months. A few weeks ago, it started stalling out and saying "Ice Fill" and "Add Water" simultaneously (while there was no ice in the bucket). Reviewed the owners manual to trouble-shoot and it said to unplug for 30 minutes and let the ice blockage clear. Plugged back in after the allotted time and after going through its cycle, it started making a screeching sound and abruptly quit working and flashed the lights again. Will be calling customer service in the morning. Not happy that a $400+ machine worked for less than a year! It's still under warranty but I've read bad reviews on here that customer service gives you the run around, doesn't answer the phone and doesn't respond to emails. I'm hoping that isn't the case with me! Until this is resolved to my satisfaction with a replacement unit, I do not recommend.

Packaging was very secure and solid. Delivery was very quick very and product support was very professionally handles. much worth the money

Stopped working after a short time of use. It leaked water consistently. Started making a screeching noise. Took the back panel off and it's full of mold. I was hospitalized over it. Absolutely do not buy this product. I called the phone number listed on other reviews but no luck.

I purchased an ice machine Sept/Oct of last year. Within a few months it was making a screeching noise. I contacted customer service (Fern) who made replacing the unit very easy. I received my new until quickly. After a couple months this unit was no longer making ice. I again contacted customer service (again someone named Fern) I asked for a refund this time. I have sent more the 20 emails to this Fern person. I have been getting the run around since Dec. I have been told they "tried" to refund my money. To we will mail you a check. TO a suposide supervisor being contacted about this multiple times. I would be cautious if buying anything from this company. They obviously don't stand behind their products let alone their word. I guess they just hope I'll forget about my money.

Customer service is great. Had a problem and the agent was very friendly and took care of the problem right away.

Unit is fast and easy to operate. Keeps up with demand. Looks nice on the counter. It is louder than the cube maker ice machines, but that's because extruder machines have a moving auger that adds to the noise.

My mom gave me this for Christmas. We love it! Makes ice quickly and we love the ice! Did have issue with noise unit was making but customer service was top notch getting the problem resolved.

If you're a ice lover this is it! The product is a great size and perfect for gatherings! It's so convenient and can be stored on your countertop. Love my new ice maker!
