Q: How much collagen is in this??

submitted by K - 6 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. Our bone broths go through a flash-heating step before being packed into the carton. This flash-heating process is at very high heat and is done to sterilize the product. Because that step is done at such a high heat, the collagen and other proteins present in our bone broth go through a process known as denaturation. It is this process that relaxes the protein and keeps it from congealing. At this time, we haven’t tested our bone broth specifically for collagen, however, we try to cook our bone broth the way you would at home – over low heat and for long hours to let the collagen and protein-rich parts break down to create a bone broth that is packed full of nutrients.

I used to get this brand all of the time and loved it. Something must have changed in their manufacturing or ingredients because now it is extremely bitter to the point of being almost inedible

Terrible. I wish I’d read the reviews before buying. I thought maybe using it to cook rice would be okay even though it wasn’t good on its own. Nope. Now the rice is ruined by this bitter broth. Why is it so bitter? I’ve made broth on my own so many times and never had an issue with bitterness. Do not buy. It is an absolute waste of money.

I haven’t ever tried drinking it straight, but I use this broth all the time for soups, pastas, and rice. It adds some extra protein, and I don’t notice the bad smells/flavors that others have mentioned.

I don’t notice the taste of chicken. I add lemon, ginger-turmeric juice, ACV and cayenne. This is the first time using this brand bone broth and it’s not as tasty as Kettle and fire broth. I hope the beef bone broth is better than this chicken one. All I taste is the add ins.

This broth was my favorite. I added it to almost everything! but this last order? Every box is so bitter! I ruined an entier soup and couldn't fix it! I added honey, lemon juice, more vegtables... nothing go rid of the strong bitter taste! It was never like this before. Its like they left in all the skins from the lemons, onions, and herbs! Please fix this!!

DO NOT USE FOR BONE BROTH FASTING!!! It smells/ tastes like the smell of wet dog! Yes you read that right. It was extremely unpleasant going down. Yes I boiled it, no I didn’t add anything to it…. I will be returning the extra boxes. Maybe if it was a base of a soup, it would be a different story. But for a fast…. ISE SWANSON BRAND…..

While I’ve never tried a more gelatinous/ expensive chicken bone broth I like the following things about this one: organic, low sodium and the best bang for your buck for the quality. I add ground turkey, jasmine rice and a little bit of extra salt & pepper and think it tastes great! I look forward to eating it! Despite negative reviews I think you should give it a try :)

This is not good bone broth. Doesn’t taste like chicken broth at all and had a very strange burnt/bitter taste to it. I have tried many different brands of bone broth and this one is the worst.

That tasted awful! Straight up like dog food 🤮 I had to eat something with a strong flavor to get the taste out of my mouth. Reviews said they could drink it plain, straight up. I was hoping it would help me feel better after being sick. Nope. That was absolutely disgusting.

I was kind of skeptical purchasing this due to some low reviews but it’s surprisingly really good alone. I don’t know why some people have reviewed this saying otherwise. I’ve been drinking a cup of it every morning with no added seasonings and it tastes good.

As a soup lover who doesn't have enough time to regularly make batches of homemade soups, but who is not satisfied with either the ingredients or nutritional value of most canned soups (not to mention the horrificly high sodium levels), I'm always trying to make simple soups in one or two-serving sizes on the fly using packaged stocks (chicken or vegetable). It's very easy for me to add some steamed veggies (or beans) and seasonings to low-sodium chicken stock and then quickly heat and whirr (with my electric hand blender) up a healthy and tasty soup course. The only problem has been that I often did not want or need to use 32-ounces of the stock (the size of most aseptic packaged soup stocks) at one time. Although once opened, these 32-ounce packages can stay usable for maybe 10 days after opening, I still found myself throwing the unused contents out. Wasteful. These individually packaged small (8-ounce) sizes allow you to make just enough for a serving or two (depending on appetite) without waste. (Yes, you're paying a bit more in a cost-per-ounce comparison, but this is about convenience and avoiding waste.) Since I'm always adding my own seasonings (in dried or fresh form), the base flavor is not that important. In fact, I prefer a "neutral" or blandish stock so that it doesn't dominate the soup I"m making. I'm not saying this stock is tasteless, but if you're not used to low-sodium stock you're not gonna like any brand of it. (I use store generic brands as well as Pacific which I find tasty enough to heat up alone and sip if needed, especially in the winter. But again this is a stock and the base for building something. Not something that has a pronounced "taste/flavor" of its own. You will however, know that it is chicken and not vegetable stock.) Since I use chicken stock to flavor a lot of other dishes (including sauteed vegetables) instead of oils and butter, having small amounts available to use as needed is both convenient and cost-effective. (I would never use those horrible chicken boullion cubes and the only other alternative, a fairly tasty powdered mix from Vogue, is just too expensive in dry form and hard to find.) That the stock is organic is a big plus. That does matter to me. If you are not cooking for a crowd, but rather for one or two, and use chicken stock for soups or in other foods, these are something you'll want to keep on hand. FYI: They are hard to find in stock locally and are more expensive than amazon. It's another convenience and cost saver to be able to order them online.
