A whiplash, for sure, but a welcome one.
First thing I gotta say is that I picked this book up because it was written by Lincoln Pierce, an author that shaped my childhood, thinking it would have mostly the comedic beats I'm used to in his earlier works. I was surprised. In a good way. There are stakes, people are shown dying on screen (though thankfully by villians and by magic) or almost being killed via swords (even if they are saved at the last moment). "Dying" and "execute" are used. The characters aren't good at their newfound skills immediately, and there are themes of parental neglect, dictatorship, and brainwashing. And I loved it. It still has that humor and charm that the series is known for, but it pulls no punches for its target demographic. Yes, it is still very much for older kids, but the respect for the fantasy culture and the different tone to the work has gotta be commended.
