We're sorry to hear you're not thrilled with Scotts Premium Topsoil. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know. Just so you know, the topsoil mix can vary a bit depending on where you are. In the Northeast, you'll often find a compost-based mix, while in the South, it's more likely to be a wood fines and bark-based mix. Both are designed to do the job and amend your soil, but they might look a little different. We want you to feel good about using our products. That's why we offer a product guarantee. If, for any reason, you're not happy with the results after using our topsoil, you're entitled to your money back. Just a heads up, there are some limitations. If you'd like to chat more about this, give us a call at 888-270-3714. We're here to help you get the most out of your yard.

We're sorry you were disappointed with Scotts Premium Topsoil. The odor is caused by decomposing natural material in the soil. The odor will dissipate once the soil is spread. I could not be more disappointed in a product as I am with this. I purchased 40 bags only to find broken glass and plastic pieces along with metal fragments after applying the product over grass seeds in my lawn. There were also large amounts of wood chunks and sticks. This is not a product I would ever recommend to anyone EVER. Today I found a broken piece of a ceramic coffee cup handle totally unacceptable. I have children running around the yard try keeping them in shoes all summer.

Hello, Jb8067! We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. This information will be forwarded to the appropriate department. This is not the quality of product we intend to produce. Every effort is made to screen out debris. It is possible that the screens were damaged and not noticed, allowing some debris into the bagged product. Thousands of bags are used yearly, with comparatively few complaints of this type. Most of our soils, especially potting mixes and garden soils, are made of composted forest products. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction which often occurs with potting mixes composed primarily of actual topsoil. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our growing media, including potting soil, garden soil, lawn soil, topsoil, etc., you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.

I bought several bags of this because it was priced very competitively. When I got home and emptied the bags into my raised beds, I was shocked to find it was mostly bark pieces and wood chunks (albeit finely shredded). The plants I have tried to grow in this soil vs another brand I cannot remember are stunted and delayed by development comparison. I suspect it is missing nutrients you get from a good mix of clay. Eventually, it will break down into good organic matter, but that will take some time. For now, it may as well be mulch

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. Formulas vary by region based on available materials. Some areas have more of a compost based formula while others have more of a bark and wood fines based mix. While typically the version found at a single retailer will be the same if stores are located in an area that has multiple of our growing media plants shipping to the area you can find different versions at different retailers in those areas. Typically northeastern areas have more of a compost based mix while southern areas have more of the wood fines and bark based mix. Both work equally well to amend native soils but look different. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. Very poor quality, I chose this brand because I thought I would be getting top quality with a name brand product. But I was wrong. It almost cost me the life of a pet. I got this to set up a terrarium for a crested gecko. It's organic, has safe moss mixed in, etc. So I bought it and put it in the terrarium Saturday,I didn't add any extra water or anything, I woke up Sunday and seen a few white spots, by Sunday night, there were a lot of white spots (mold), then monday morning it was so much worse.most of the bottom of the terrarium was covered in mold, and it wasn't just on the surface, but through out the product, which was about 3" deep. Now, when I set it up, this product just went into the bottom. I had fake vines and all in there, so luckily, my gecko being arboreal stayed in the plants and not on the "ground." But not only did this mold, but it had a ton of plastic and debris in it as well. I think maybe I should have gone with the generic brand product. It would have probably been a better quality and cheaper. I will never buy this brand again.

We are concerned to hear about your experience with Scotts Premium Topsoil. Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils. It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganism including fungus. In fact fungus mold have been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically. We would like the opportunity to gather some additional information and offer assistance. Please reach out to our Consumer Services team at 888-270-3714.

I bought Black Cow top soil to plant grass seed on a new lawn. It only came in large bags, so when I needed more I bought Scott’s premium top soil. It had so many large wood chips and chunks I thought I must have purchased potting soil, not for grass seeding. I checked the bags and it said for lawns, so I figured they knew what they were doing. Grass has grown beautifully where I used the Black Cow, but not where I used Scott’s! I reseeded, but now I’m thinking these wood chips are not going to allow the new seed to sprout! Very disappointed! Creating a beautiful lawn is hard work with all the prep that goes into it, and to have the top soil hinder that is unfortunate! I will have to wait until fall to fix the bare area.

I have been a lifelong user of Scotts Topsoil and enjoyed the benefits from its use. I was an advocate for the product recommending to friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, over the past 2-3 years the quality of soil in the bag has diminished greatly. I regularly find sticks, shards of wood and other debris with my bag purchase. Time to find a new soil for my yard.

Have bought several hundred bags over the years, I have 1/2" box mesh screened a lot of them and only find a handful of material that is wood and small rock, not really a big deal to worry about. It adds organic material to existing native soil for more microbial soil health and fertiliy it is not dirt or one of the sand, silt, clay types of "soil" bit it works for what it's intended purpose is, to enrich marginal light colored dirt that has little organic content.

Lots of money spent and the were full of larger to smallrocks(lots of them), plastic, glass, and lots of mulch and tons of tree debris!! I had to hire again guys to rake up the debris several times so I could have it all seeded. This is the worst TOPSOIL if you want to call it that I have ever bought,‘I trusted the SCOTTS name!!

1 reply from Customer Care team - 9 months ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. While the composting process does destroy most of the weed seeds in our soils, there still can be some viable weed seeds after composting. Soil naturally contains plant seeds. It is unlikely that the worms were present at time of packaging. If there are holes in the bag and the product is stored outside on the ground, it can be accessible to worms. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. I should have read the reviews before purchasing, but I trusted the Scott's brand name. I see from the Scott's responses that sticks and wood chips are intentionally left in the soil. That should cease. Folks buy topsoil for pure soil, If I want mulch, I know where to buy it. Purify your production methods to screen out all wood, wood chips and rocks. I get better soil from a generic bag which is less expensive than Scott's. I used this soil to cover grass seed and now I spend my days picking out wood chips and sticks every time I water the seeds. A predominant use of topsoil is as seed cover. I don't want mulch in my seed cover.
