Q: How do you take the bottom tray off in order to clean it? And how do you thread the wick through the holes for the self-watering system to work without waterlogging the soil?
A: Hello Mark - We appreciate your interest in this Self-Watering Window Rectangular Indoor/Outdoor Planter Box.The planter's bottom tray can be easily detached. There are slits in the upper portion, so if you remove the bottom portion to water the plant, the water will seep down through the dirt and out the bottom. As a result, we do not recommend removing the bottom part of the planter. This planter, with its clever and convenient design that waters plant roots from the bottom, helps take the guesswork out of watering by simply filling the reservoir in the bottom for plants to absorb from above. – Peter
submitted byPeter - 2 years agoTarget staff supportA: I’ve asked similar questions with no response. These boxes are terrible for outside. If it rains, it won’t drain and your plants will be water sogged. I have had these for two summers and each summer my plants have died from too much water, root rot.
submitted byep - 1 year agoA: We drilled drainage holes in bottom and placed the planters in wooden boxes made to fit. We had no drainage issues.
submitted byMrsmac111 - 6 months agoA: I've only used these for one season but had no problem with drainage after it rained. Ours sit in boxes attached to a privacy fence. I grew 5 different flower varieties last year & all looked great!

Q: How can you attach this planter to the outside of window? I see some photos that customers placed outdoors, out of their windows or home.
A: We built wooden boxes to spec that hold each planter box & attached the boxes to a wooden horizontal fence with a wooden turnlock so they hang on the fence in between the boards. Works great!

Q: Ok I see from the question above the dimensions of the 8” So what’s the dimensions of the 4.5” It would be great if you could correct this item’s description is elevate unwanted shipping/return charges.
A: The planter comes in 2 width size options (4.5 and 8)
