Matte finish, high quality
These barstools look quite luxe -- the gold finish is slightly matte appearing, so they are gold, but not shiny. The upholstery fabric on the underside isn't all the same color -- 3 of the four were black, and one was white, if that might be a concern for you. We ordered two sets and neither box came with instructions on assembly, but they were easy to figure out. It took maybe 25 minutes to complete 4 barstools. I did add furniture pads to the bottom because the plastic pads seemed like they'd scratch the floor a bit (with kids who aren't super careful)! Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
