SOG Terminus XR - S35VN fits the bill

5 stars because it checks all the boxes. I bought it for EDC use. I have no plans to fight my way clear of marauding hordes but I wanted a knife I could have confidence in. It probably doesn't compare to a knife 2 or 3x the price. I don't feel that would be a reasonable comparison. I wanted a knife to use, I have no plans to abuse it, but I want it to work first time every time. At the same time, I want a kniife that doesn't cost so much that I have to worry about it. So far so good. My all-time favorite EDC was the AirSoG. If it had a clip I'd still be carrying it. Replacing that knife in my pocket is something other knives have failed to do. The Terminus is still clipped in my pocket.

SOG Terminus XR and XR LTE CRYO (Gold)

I bought my first SOG knife a couple of months ago, the Terminus xr late cryo gold. About 6a week ago I purchased the xr version. Overall both knives are fantastic but there are some concerns. Right out of the box the XR had excellent action, no blade or lock wobble and centering was perfect. The XR LTE was a little stiffer but still had great action thonI did adjust it very slightly to match the XR. Again no blade or lock wobble and perfect centering. Ergonomics of both are great, the only issue is some edges, especially on the XR LTE are sharp and create hot spots when gripping tightly. The Kick on the XR LTE feels perfect. The Kick on the XR was very sharp on the bottom row of the jimping... 30 seconds with a hard file fixed it. The XR lock on the XR feels perfectly smooth however on the XR LTE it's very abrasive sounding. Both work well and are easy to move but the smoother XR is where it's at. Both the XR & XR LTE have fantastic one hand open and close action. Easily the best at this point price. The XR heavier than the XR LTE however for balance and overall hand feel the XR is my favoirite. Eventhough it's not as well balanced as the XR LTE, it does feel great as I like a little heft (not heavy) when handling my knives. The XR feels perfect! Both versions have the CPM S35VN blade steel. No issues there super impressed and both were super sharp out of the box final ground to 600 to 800 is my guess. Appearance of both knives to my eyes is they look far more expensive then they are. The styling is fantastic in my opinion. I love the balance of tacticle and fashionable casual and formal. It's a great looking knife. Cutting regular stock printing paper is pleasing to both the ears, eyes, and feel. The blades in both are uniformly shape from tip to choil. This is the kind of knofe I want to carry everyday and also into the bush for all small knife duties. Cut a box, open and envelope, clean a fish, eat and apple or a steak. Fit and finish overall is very good on this fully ambidextrous folder with deeeeep carry pocket clip. I'm looking for the first version of the XR with graphite scales that has the extra routing grip lines and that dredded SOG pocket clip most people hate that I love! I want one with the grey cryo blade. If you know where I can get one email squires@telus.net

    Perfect EDC

I EDC this knife for duty, perfect size and weight, doesn’t stick out from uniform and it’s easy to back pack it too. The deployment is smooth and fast in both in and out. The S35VN blade is a win and retains the edge even after a whole day of tactical cardboard cutting. I wish the clip was flush with the handle instead of loop over the handle, the little gap always get stuck in pocket which takes an extra fraction of a second making my anxiety spike up before I slice my apple (I know I could bite it but I like to cut things). Still, it has been my favorite EDC.

The kick on the back scratches my hand if I have it clipped inside my pocket. Otherwise, good blade, easy to open, good size.

    Pretty good knife, not repairable

The hinge on this knife came out of the box a little tight, and the lock was a little hard to pull. I tried to take it apart to adjust it and oil the hinge, but all of the screws on the frame were permanently threadlocked in place, including the hinge screw. Additionally, they were all small Torx bits (T5 and T4, I think), and they stripped my bits every time I tried to remove them. In the end, I couldn't get them out and I just decided to ignore it, as much as it annoyed me. This is one of only a few knives that I could find with both an Axis/XR style lock and a flipper tab, and I overall love it. The blade is razer sharp, the blade locks nicely, and it is super nice to use. The handle does feel a bit cheap, but I guess you get what you pay for. TL;DR - SOG has a great knife here, and I love the opening and locking mechanisms. However, repairability is a big thing for me, and I wish they could get rid of the permanent threadlocker in favor of semi-permanent or (ideally) none. I shouldn't be stripping 2 bits trying to get one screw out.

    Terminus XR - S35VN

I had been thinking seriously about buying the Terminus XR - S35VN but the price was a little too heavy even knowing that it was probably an excellent purchase. Around Black Friday I thought I would look again at this knife on the SOG site and saw it had been noticeably discounted. If ever I were to purchase it, now was the time. Yes, I would have to face the dreaded backlash from my wife but sometimes you have to go through some unpleasantries in order to get what you want. No pain, no gain right? When my wife found out she was not happy. She pointed out about 5 other pocket knives I had in my possession. She didn't realize that these were acquired over the course of many years. Each time I bought a pocket knife I learned what did and didn't work. Let's face it, every guy from boyhood has dreams of owning the perfect pocket knife. As you grow into a man, you learn some were good knives, others not so great. Eventually I wanted a knife that could become an heirloom to my son when I pass on. The spat with my wife was over in a day or so and life goes on but getting back to the review on this knife. The Terminus XR - S35VN is the knife I would have wanted ever since I was a boy only I can take care of this one responsibly as I know it can take care of me. Let me say that the design and craftsmanship are superb! I am not disappointed in any way. Who cares if it was made overseas? It is easy to recognize the quality of this tool. The sleek profile fits easily into my pants pocket with the attached clip and I don't need to fish around at the bottom of my pocket trying to find it when needed. It is also unobtrusive. I like the scale material being made of carbon fiber. It has a great looking natural appearance with a pattern that has depth to it and the tastefully cut groves for gripping in the scales are very functional. There are 3 ways to open the knife but I find only 2 that work well for me: the lock release tabs on both sides of the knife (which must be used simultaneously with the thumb and index finger on opposite sides of the knife and a quick flick of the wrist outward) and the raised flipper stud (I don't know what it's called) on the spine of the knife near its pivot point (which I work by pulling back on the stud sharply with the tip of my index finger). The thumb studs can be used but require a lot more effort. To close the blade just pull back on the locking release tabs on both sides simultaneously being careful to keep hand parts out of the way of the arc of the blade and flick your wrist downward and inward. It is very cool! I can easily sense the quality of steel that was used to make the blade. The lettering on the blade is nicely done and can't really be seen except by close inspection. It is very impressive and the edge is very sharp! The construction quality is immaculate! I love the symmetry of the blade as it sits in its folded position, equal spacing between both sides the liner and the blade. The movement of the blade is satin smooth and works so easily once you release the locking tabs that you can easily flick the blade too quickly and have it bounce back from its fully open position. Once opened, the blade is rock solid with no slop whatsoever. The knife for me, when it is opened, is just the right size. I don't need a knife with eye catching colors or embellishments. I don't need a large blade and I want a blade with a great functional design. I want a knife that is just business. I love it! By the way, if you're wondering whether I was paid to make this review let me say I was not. I just appreciate a great product and want the news to get out there. This is the pocket knife that I have been searching for all these years (I'm in my 60's so that's saying something). I have never regretted buying it once. It is my every day carry and if I never lose it, it will be my son's heirloom someday.

Great return to quality knives. The steel is great, attention to detail, blade is centered in channel. Just some light dry lube and the bearings let the blade move and it’s locks solid. No movement. Already had the Benchmade in my hand. Highly recommend SOG.

    Decent EDC Option

This knife has a lot of potential and all the right ingredients to be a top EDC, but SOG needs to improve their QC out of the China plant where this was manufactured. That said though, the price is very compelling even with the quirks. The Good: THANK YOU SOG for listening to your customers and changing the clip and engraved logo on the blade. Huge upgrades in my book. Really classes up the knife. Ergos and proportions are great. The knife has a quality feel to it. Fit and finish is good. The Less Good: The grind on the blade is lacking and barely cuts paper. The inside of the flipper tab catches on the lock cross bar and inhibits deployment unless you hit the sweet spot when retracting the XR lock (it is sensitive to applying even pressure to both sides). Once you learn what it wants, then wrist flicking is possible for both opening and closing. The action on my example is a bit stiff. Not gritty, but deployment using the flipper tab could be better (probably just needs lubrication).

It is a really good knife for the money. The blade steel is very good and the xr lock is good. I like that the thumbstuds and the flipper are easy to use. Also you can open and close with a wrist flip. The only thing that could make it better would be a button lock or plunge lock instead of the xr lock.
