A Fun Small-Town Romance
4 out of 5 stars
BlessednBookish - 3 years ago
Tacos for Two by Betsy St. Amant is a sweet, small-town romance with spicy twists and endearing references to You Got Mail. Although the story was more light-hearted most of the time and made me laugh out loud often, it still touched on deeper subjects such as grief, insecurity, and the frustrations of dealing with family. I loved Rory’s (Colormeturquoise) quirkiness, her steller memorization of movie lines, and the love and loyalty she had for her family. Her hot/cold demeanor and easily roused temper put me off a little, but as I gained a full picture of her past through the story, I understood the reasons behind her insecurity and lack of trust. I still enjoyed her character and was so proud of her by the end. Jude (Strongerman99) is an all-around good guy from an all-around not-good family. I admired his drive to break the cycle of negativity, manipulation, and dishonesty by forging his own path. It didn’t hurt that he’s an attractive, intelligent man with a big, soft heart. I loved watching him grow into himself as he found his own way. Truthfully, all the other characters are fantastic as well. Independent. Vivid. Genuine. Rory has such a wonderful support group between Nicole, Hannah, and Grady. I loved that trio and felt they were a well of inspiration and wisdom. And man, I wish I had Hannah’s confidence and insight into the world around me. What a jewel! Overall, I enjoyed this story. I got distracted by the hot/cold nature of Rory and Jude’s relationship but held out hope for Colormeturquoise and Strongerman99. This story is a clean/sweet light-hearted romance. Faith is mentioned in passing, but there is not a strong spiritual arc for the characters. Still, the story is entertaining and will make you crave tacos! I was given a copy of the book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

What’s a girl to do when she inherits the family food truck, and she can’t cook to save her life? She fakes it till she makes it, baby! Rory Perez had aspirations of her own: to run her own event planning business – her extremely organized, turquoise-inspired Pinterest boards can attest to that! But an untimely emergency lands her family’s food truck into her hands, and she feels completely unprepared. Despite her feeling of obligation to save her family legacy, Rory really hates working in the restaurant business. Plus, she wants to have some time (maybe – she’s a little wary) to get to know the guy she’s been chatting with in an online dating app. But she’s busy keeping the food truck afloat, and perhaps a little too comfortable with the idea of keeping the anonymity of her online dating life at a safe distance – online. Because change was scary, and she could only deal with so much change in her life. Jude Strong, Food Network aficionado, was born into an intimidating family-owned law firm, but desires nothing more than to ditch the family business and cook professionally. “There was special joy in creating something and having someone else find pleasure in it.” Inspired by the local food truck festival, Jude feels like this is his chance to pursue his own culinary dream. Although the reader is clued in fairly early that Rory and Jude are chatting with each other on the dating app, it doesn’t make it into real life soon enough. Will their budding relationship survive a food truck festival that make or break their individual businesses, or are they toast? I’m only partway into this book, but it’s already giving off major vibes of You’ve Got Mail, which is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies! Trade in the books from that classic rom-com for tacos, and Tacos for Two by Betsy St. Amant is bound to be an adorably spicy read! Celebrating my hubby’s birthday today was the perfect excuse to partake in some tasty tacos. One of his favorite places is Seoul Taco – a Korean taco restaurant – and bulgogi beef tacos are his go-to every time. We enjoyed our Tacos for Two today.

This book was so different from most I’ve read. I can’t remember reading a story where the main characters are chatting through an online dating app. Their feelings for each other were real, but I can’t imagine how weird that would be without knowing what the other person looks like. What if their chemistry on screen didn’t sizzle in person? I loved watching Rory and Jude’s in person interactions. Both trying to fight the natural chemistry they had because their affections lie elsewhere. Or do they? For some reason Jude brings out strong emotions and reactions in Rory. When she feels threatened by Jude and his new endeavor it brings out the mama bear in her. Wanting to protect her Aunt’s legacy comes naturally and being responsible for paying the bills is a lot on her shoulders. Jude’s family owns a law firm, why would he need to make a truck that is in direct competition with hers? Instead of asking for his reasoning the battle between the two heats up. Can Rory see beyond herself and believe that she can win the cook off based on her skills alone? Or will her emotions cause her to lose the contest in the most public way possible? I had a lot of fun reading this book. It was fun seeing the world through a taco truck and a law firm. Strong family ties can cause us to do a lot of things, even when it’s not the best thing for us. I liked seeing Rory and Jude grow and learn more about themselves in the process. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Contemporary Fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Rory Perez owns and operates Modest's most famous Mexican Food Truck, but she can't cook. When a cooking contest comes along that could secure the future of her niece, she knows that she needs to win, but could a new online romance and a rival food truck foil her plans? A charming rom-com, with You've Got Mail vibes updated for the modern day and plenty of delicious food, you just can't go wrong with this delightful small town romance. I loved the secondary characters just as much as the main characters, especially Hannah, Grady, and Nicole. I loved how the author pulled me into the community of Modest, with how well developed the non-main characters were. Jude is a man with a passion for cooking and an identity beyond his powerhouse law firm family. His heart is in the right place, though his actions are often misinterpreted, I loved his genuineness and how he takes time to befriend Alton. There is a lot going on in this small town, and I loved that there were other things going on in the background. Overall, a completely enjoyable read, feel-good, with great humor, a smile wasn't far from my lips whenever I was reading this book. I love, love, loved the characters, and fun food filled plot. Definitely perfect for fans of rom-coms and tacos! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The bright cover of Tacos for Two is was first drew me to this book. I had not read Betsy St. Amant before but will be reading more of her books. I loved how the book began with chats between StrongerMan99 and ColorMeTurquoise. It drew me into the book and had me wondering how it would turn out. The banter was great, a mix of humor and depth. I had mixed feelings for Rory. I understood her stress with the food truck and her obligations with her cousin, Hannah (the sweetest character). I loved her friendship with Grady and Nicole. I enjoyed how she interacted with all three of them. However, I did not get her interactions with Jude. She was the queen of jumping to conclusions and assuming he was exactly like the guy she had previously dated. Technically, she owned the Salsa Street food truck. And technically, she couldn't cook to save her life. Jude was also a character that was hard to define. I could understand his feelings of not wanting to follow in his family's footsteps, and wanting to go on his own path. That is an admirable quality. I appreciated that once he realized he didn't know Alton's name he made an effort to essentially be a better person. The food truck, however, served as a frequent reminder of the pressures riding Rory's shoulders like a pageant queen on a hometown parade float. The amount of time Rory spent jumping to conclusions and the miscommunications with Jude seemed over the top. Other than that, I enjoyed the book as a whole. It was mostly a quick, light read with doses of humor. I loved all the diversity in the book, including a character with special needs, as it was beautifully done. I am not sure if I have ever seen You've Got Mail all the way through, but those who have will appreciate the nods to the movie. It made me think I might want to take the time to watch the movie all the way through. Thank you to Net Galley and Revell for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Charming Story

Tacos for Two by Betsy St. Amant is a delightful Romantic Comedy! The story has many marvelous similarities to You’ve Got Mail, one of my favorite movies of all time! Rory Perez and Jude Strong know each other in “real” life and through a dating app. Rory is the proud owner of a food truck she inherited, but she is not much of a cook. Jude has been through law school, but really wants to get away from the family business by not taking the Bar, and having his own food truck. When Rory and Jude meet in real life, they definitely are not impressed with the other. This charming story had me rooting for Rory and Jude. The author does an amazing job showing both character’s perspectives and letting you walk(or run) a mile in their shoes to see their perspective. I was so invested in their friendship and growing relationship. I loved their texts. The author wrote terrific secondary characters that were interesting, funny, and added greatly to the story. Tacos for Two is a story about forgiveness, redemption and making peace with who you are. The author has created wonderful characters that you will enjoy getting to know. It is a tasty romantic comedy that will leave you satisfied. (sort of a like a good taco) I was given a copy by Revell and NetGalley and required to write a positive review.

Love love and love this story!! We all have those moments where we think we have a certain person pegged, that we know exactly who they are and that they're up to something. But usually, God has things go in a direction that we never saw coming, to let us know that He puts people in our lives for a reason. We just have to trust Him through the process. I received a copy from the publisher, all thoughts are my own.

What an absolutely delightful rom-com! This book totally needs to be made into a movie. Betsy St. Amant combines just the right amount of sass, snark, movie references, and tender vulnerability within a drama-filled food truck competition and sets it on simmer with sparks of romance and small town charm. I so needed this book as a pick-me-up after a long week! There are truly hilarious moments that will make you cry from laughing so hard and there are truly touching and tender moments that will make you cry from feeling so much. Jude and Rory's on-line banter and flirting are too cute for words but their actual interactions before they know of each other's identity are.....stuff of great rom-com movies. Jude is a swoon-worthy hero and Rory is a feisty heroine who challenges and validates him. The secondary characters are also fantastic; I particularly loved Hannah, Rory's cousin, and Grady, Rory's food truck partner. Within the folds of wonderful humor and romance are lessons of seeing beyond the surface, following after 'soul joy', forgiveness and reconciliation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic comedy. One of the most fun books of 2021! I received a copy from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
