Na Galileia do tempo de Jesus, os meninos em Israel iniciavam seus estudos da Torá aos 6 anos. Aos 10, quando completavam o primeiro estágio, a escola primária, chamada Beit Sefer, já tinham a Torá decorada. Apenas os alunos que se destacavam seguiam para a escola secundária, Beit Talmud, e mergulhavam no restante das Escrituras e na tradição oral dos rabinos e suas muitas interpretações e aplicações da Torá.


Aos 14 e 15 anos, somente os melhores entre os melhores estavam estudando, geralmente aos pés de um rabino famoso e respeitado. Esses pouquíssimos meninos da elite intelectual de Israel eram chamados talmidim (do hebraico: talmid, discípulo; talmidim, discípulos). Apesar de ser considerado um rabino marginal, não reconhecido formalmente pelas autoridades religiosas de seu tempo, Jesus de Nazaré também tinha seus discípulos e seguidores, seus talmidim. Este livro apresenta a essência da mensagem de Jesus aos seus talmidim de ontem e de hoje.
