About the Book

"The 'Anti-Ableist Manifesto' defines ableism as discrimination in favor of non-disabled people and helps readers understand that ending discrimination begins with self-reflection. Tiffany Yu celebrates the power of stories and lived experiences to foster the proximity, intimacy, and humanity of disability identities that have far too often been 'othered' and rendered invisible. ... Organized from the personal to the professional, the domestic to the political, the Me to the We to the Us, [this book] frames context for conversations, breaks down the language of ableism, identifies microaggressions, and proposes real actions that lead to genuine and authentic allyship"--

Book Synopsis

Tiffany Yu takes readers on a revelatory examination of disability--how to unpack biases and build an inclusive and accessible world.

As the Asian American daughter of immigrants, living with PTSD, and sustaining a permanent arm injury at age nine, Tiffany Yu is well aware of the intersections of identity that affect us all. She navigated the male-dominated world of corporate finance as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs before founding Diversability, an award-winning community business run by disabled people building disability pride, power, and leadership, and creating the viral Anti-Ableism series on TikTok.

Organized from personal to professional, domestic to political, Me to We to Us, The Anti-Ableist Manifesto frames context for conversations, breaks down the language of ableism, identifies microaggressions, and offers actions that lead to authentic allyship.

- How do we remove ableist language from our daily vocabulary?
- How do we create inclusive events?
- What are the advantages of hiring disabled employees, and what market opportunities are we missing out on when we don't consider disabled consumers?

With contributions from disability advocates, activists, authors, entrepreneurs, scholars, educators, and executives, Yu celebrates the power of stories and lived experiences to foster the proximity, intimacy, and humanity of disability identities that have far too often been "othered" and rendered invisible.

"Yu offers an impressive barrage of simple strategies, proactive tools, and action items to aid readers in becoming better allies to people with both apparent and nonapparent disabilities, and she includes 'reflection questions' at the conclusion of each chapter. Perhaps the most useful and effective section in the book details how readers can make active, consistent contributions to demarginalizing disabled populations through awareness and civic and social engagement. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. The Anti-Ableist Manifesto is a comprehensive and intersectional review of the past, present, and future of disability justice and pride. Tiffany Yu takes readers through 34 thematic chapters, each of which focusing on a tenet of the manifesto. The chapters scaffold across three sections: Anti-Ableism and You, Anti-Ableism and Your Community, and Anti-Ableism and Societal Change. Akin to the educational and contemplative style of Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad, The Anti-Ableist Manifesto is a workbook holding impactful lessons and examples, punctuated by questions for reflection at each chapter’s close. Yu includes a wide variety of quotes and perspectives from members of the disability community, reinforcing the truth that “‘we are not a monolith”. While the cadence of the book and its three sections were intentionally crafted for maximum impact, readers could turn to the table of contents and choose any chapter of their liking to read; they would still receive a digestible, thought-provoking, and meaningful lesson on anti-ableism, including pointers on how to bring this practice into their daily lives. I’ve worked with the disability community for over 10 years; The Anti-Ableist Manifesto will certainly be my go-to resource to share with friends, colleagues, and fellow advocates looking to foster change within themselves and fight for disability justice in our communities and world at large.

Whether you’re a member of the disabled community or not, Tiffany Yu’s illuminating tome offers a depth and quality of insight that will change the way you see the world and move through it. Weaving personal stories with anecdotes from community members, Yu has created the building blocks to thoroughly understand and enact change…which, it turns out, isn’t just about benefiting the disabled community…because when this community wins, we ALL win (quite literally). Easy to digest and divided into clear, concise, and well-researched sections, each chapter also offers reflection questions to deepen our personal insight while also expanding our wider lens on access, inclusion, and what it takes to be a good (and better) human. Yu takes a fully inclusive approach in this writing, giving us an understanding of intersectional inclusion, and how individual stories may be affected by the way in which they identify or are perceived by others. This book is essential reading for EVERYONE – especially if you’re not a member of the disabled community. There is so much to learn, and we are given direct prompts to offer more kindness and inclusivity to those around us (since we are all, whether knowingly or not, connected to others who identify as disabled). What words and title are appropriate? How can we make media more accessible? And what does disability history have to teach us about how we can move forward with more heart? Disability is not a bad word…and compassionate curiosity is the best way to find out what each individual needs to thrive. DEI/B and HR practitioners should consider this key reading – and should be reaching out to their teams to deepen their learning, as well. Get on board. And get good with the world around you.
