About the Book
A history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict told from the Palestinian perspective, arguing the period since the Balfour Declaration of 1917 has amounted to 100 years of colonial war against the Palestinians.Book Synopsis
A landmark history of one hundred years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history
In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, "in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone." Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi's great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members--mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists--The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process. Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.Review Quotes

An outstanding book."
--Eugene Rogan, author of The Arabs: A History "A riveting and original work, the first to explore the century of war against the Palestinians on the basis of deep immersion in their struggle--a work enriched by solid scholarship, vivid personal experience, and acute appreciation of the concerns and aspirations of the contending parties in this deeply unequal conflict."
--Noam Chomsky, author of Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy "Brave, brilliant, and magisterial, this outstanding work of historical scholarship is also full of high drama and fascinating narrative. You can disagree with Khalidi but you cannot afford to miss the opportunity of arguing with him."
--Homi K. This book is sure to become a classic account."
--Elizabeth F. Thompson, author of Justice Interrupted: The Struggle for Constitutional Government in the Middle East "This book is a remarkable interweaving of three distinctive strands: a deeply researched history of the struggle between Zionist aspirations and Palestinian resistance; an analytical framework that places the conflict within the context of settler colonialism; and a personal family history that brings the narrative alive. Newcomers and specialists alike will learn much from reading this sweeping account."
--William B. Quandt, author of Peace Process: American Diplomacy and the Arab-Israeli Conflict Since 1967 "Learned and clear-eyed, this compelling history of the long war to deny Palestinian rights exposes a century of blunders, misjudgments, and willful deceptions. Highly recommended."
--Stephen M. Walt, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "Beautifully written and accessible, this book is an invaluable examination of the Palestinian-Zionist encounter as a struggle against settler-colonial domination, not as an issue of conflict resolution--a vital difference, necessary for a deeper understanding of the war and for its meaningful resolution. The Hundred Years' War on Palestine illustrates, at its core, the refusal of Palestinians to accept their own defeat and their desire to live as equals with Israelis in a land they are destined to share."
--Sara Roy, author of Hamas and Civil Society in Gaza: Engaging the Islamist Social Sector "As in any book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there is ample room for debate and controversy. And as in any book by Rashid Khalidi, there is history, erudition, politics and passion aplenty. There is also his tenacious conviction that 'there are now two peoples in Palestine, irrespective of how they came into being, and the conflict between them cannot be resolved as long as the national existence of each is denied by the other.'"
--Rob Malley, International Crisis Group CEO and White House Coordinator for the Middle East under President Barack Obama "Rashid Khalidi makes clear that the Zionists could not have created modern day Israel without abundant help from Britain and the United States. A must read for the growing number of people who are interested in understanding the real roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
--John J. Mearsheimer, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "With moral passion and analytical rigor, Khalidi skillfully unearths the narrative of a long and bitter national conflict, providing a multitude of timely, acute, and original insights. This compelling book is a must read."
--Zeev Sternhell, author of The Anti-Enlightenment Tradition "In a painfully sober analysis of what made Zionism, an anachronistic colonialist enterprise, so successful, Rashid Khalidi also shows how Palestinians defy fatalism and refuse to vanish. His book is a tribute and contribution to his people's perseverance."
--Amira Hass, author of Drinking the Sea at Gaza "This fascinating and instructive blend of autobiography and history should be read by anybody who wants to understand the tragedy of Palestine and the Palestinians."
--Patrick Cockburn, author of The Rise of the Islamic State "Rashid Khalidi has produced a sophisticated and insightful historical analysis of the Palestine-Israel conflict that is enriched by deep knowledge, clear and critical views, and his own experiences of key moments."
--Ian Black, author of Enemies and Neighbors: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017 "This searing account makes clearer than ever the often deliberately understated colonial nature of the Palestinian experience--and it reminds us of the Palestinians' extraordinary capacity to remain steadfast despite the local and global forces arrayed against them."
--Saree Makdisi, author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation of Culture

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Palestine has been fighting a war for the last one hundred years. The authors family was actually involved in many of the events that they described in this book. I love reading WW2 history books so this was a new genre for me, but it kept my attention the entire time. This book is written from a Muslims perspective which helped me gain knowledge on many Muslim facts I wasn’t aware of. Great book for learning! I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Our local bookstore has this book featured in the summer book club, and I was interested to see what perspective it took. I disagree with the perspective and content of the book, but externally it's good quality. There is a picture about every chapter or two, but honestly, I feel like they add almost nothing to the content. Most are pictures of individuals, which don't add much to the content it is covering. There is a hefty note section at the back of the Book, which I do always appreciate, although they sometimes can be biased. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Having never been to the middle east, I was looking for an insider's perspective when I bought this book and I was not disappointed. I love that it includes relevant pictures and historical photos as well to make it more personal as you read the story and I really felt like I could identify with what the author was describing about the Palestinian struggle. I have mainly heard pro Israel viewpoints with everything that's going on in the world right now so this was very eye-opening to me to understand more about why there is constant tension between these two groups. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] History books are typically not my first choice of books to read, but this one brings you into the story of his own experiences-it is deep. I liked that there were photos and maps included and a notes section at the end of the book. I’m glad I read this book-his description of this being more than a conflict and that it’s been ongoing for so long is heart wrenching! Great book! I received an incentive to write this review.

Rashid Khalidi mixes personal and historic information that keeps readers interested and engaged. It’s not always light reading, but definitely eye opening and worth the read. It’s a New York Times Bestseller for a reason. If you need a book to read this summer pick this one up! I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Khalidi offers a powerful, deeply personal, and researched account of the Palestinian struggle against colonialism and dispossession. He blends historical analysis with personal experiences to offer a deeper understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I love that this is written as a history novel - offering a survey of actual events and recounting those events through the lens of those who lived through them. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi really highlights the perspective from a Palestinian perspective. As a person who loves to read fiction; this book, surprisingly, caught my attention from the start. I loved the pictures and the notes provided if you wanted a little more information on the subject. The book was easy to read and understand and I recommend it. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Rashid Khalidi’s The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine offers a compelling, personal account of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a century-long struggle against settler colonialism. Blending history with family stories, it really struck me how Khalidi presents Palestinians not as passive victims, but rather, as active participants in their own resistance. His critique of global powers is both clear and thoughtful, and his storytelling truly brings real humanity to a deeply political subject. This book doesn’t only inform, but it challenges readers to see the conflict through a very different lens. I’d say this is essential reading for anyone who may want to better understand the people, the pain, and most importantly, the persistence behind the headlines we so often read. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recommend The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine for its powerful, well researched perspective that reframes the Palestinian struggle as a century long anti-colonial fight, offering essential context often missing from mainstream narratives — and for its ability to connect personal history with global politics in a way that humanizes politics. Highly recommend. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It’s an incredible book filled with so much knowledge and a decidedly Arab point of view. It does tell so many facts and so much history which helps when trying to understand the friction in that region. I found it incredibly thought provoking to imagine a world without this war. One hundred years is a very long time. This history really helped me understand how and why this conflict is so difficult to resolve. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this book for my husband because he loves following political world events and has been interested in learning about the Palestine war. While he hasn’t read it yet, this book seems to be well written and very informative. I briefly looked through it and was impressed to see many historical pictures to help tell the story of the war. This would be the perfect book if you’re trying to learn more about Palestine I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thi is very heart wrenching, powerful and hard to describe this author, Rashid Khalidi shows his personal narrative into their account of events even it’s taboo to talk about it. The Hundred Years War on Palestine is necessary to understand their issue of conflict and the author digged and explained it in meaning written text or very well. Hopefully many countries or many people can understand this Palestine situation since media didn’t bring this full of details like the author on this book I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this book unsure of what to think at first. This is stuff i never learned in school. I really did like how they had some pictures in this book. It truly does put into perspective what these people have endured for many and many of years. I had no clue there were six declarations of war the most recent one from the year 2000 to the year 2014. That to me was mind blowing. I also liked how in the end there is a notes section. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book give a powerful look at the Israel-Palestinian conflict, showing it’s a long term struggle where Palestinians were pushed out and often with help from bigger powers like Britain and the U.S. The author Khalidi highlights six major events and in this history book, included his personal stories including his brother. The brother’s house got buldozed by Israeli military, and while he criticized Israeli but he also mentioned about Palestinian leadership. It’s an eye opening and if you want to understand the conflict. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just finished reading The Hundred Years of War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi and it really helped to open my eyes. Khalidi does not just give a history lesson but brings you into the story through his own family’s experiences. Showing that the conflict is both deeply personal and political. He makes a strong case that what’s been happening isn’t just a conflict but a long running effort to push Palestinians out of their own land. It will challenge everything you thought you knew. I appreciated the maps included along with pictures of devastation to better understand the realities of it all. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] “The Hundred Years War,” by Rashid Khalidi really opened my eyes. Khalidi Doesn’t give you a history lesson – he brings you into the story by his own family experiences, showing how deeply personal and political this conflict is. Just this portion of the book where he speaks of his own wife’s pregnancy, really grounds the conflict to a very human, relatable level. It’s not just a mass of faceless, nameless people anymore, it has to do with himself and the stakes his own family faces. He makes a strong case that what’s been happening isn’t just a “conflict,” but a long running effort to push Palestinians out of their own land. Extremely thought-provoking and challenging. If you are open – minded, this is a must read for you to gain another perspective on the current conflict in that region of the world, no matter what you believe about it today. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was a good book. It's not a dry academic text. The author blends personal family stories with historical analysis, which makes it feel both personal and sharply political. Whether or not you agree with all his views, it offers a powerful perspective. I like that it includes some pictures for context. I also especially appreciate the notes section at the end. There are almost 50 pages of notes, and being able to flip back there to find more information was very helpful. I received an incentive to write this review.
