When her mother, the Persian king's famous senior scribe, is kidnapped, Jemmah and her sister must sneak undetected into enemy territory to rescue her. But infiltrating their adversary's lands proves easier than escaping them. A manufacturer of some of the best weaponry in the East, Asher has only one goal: to destroy his father. But following his escape from prison, Asher is irresistibly drawn to Jemmah, unaware that she guards her own secret. Book Synopsis

Jemmah has always thought of herself as perfectly ordinary . . . until she faces extraordinary circumstances.

When her mother, the Persian king's famous senior scribe, is kidnapped, Jemmah and her sister must sneak undetected into enemy territory to rescue her. But infiltrating their adversary's lands proves easier than escaping them. Fleeing through dangerous mountain passes, their survival depends on the skills of a stranger they free from prison: a mysterious prince named Asher.

Asher is not who the world believes he is. Despite his royal blood, he has had to climb his way out of poverty to forge success from nothing. A manufacturer of some of the best weaponry in the East, Asher has only one goal: to destroy his father. But following his escape from prison, Asher is irresistibly drawn to Jemmah, unaware that she guards her own secret.

Jemmah must convince Asher to give up everything he has worked for, all for the sake of a higher purpose he's not sure he believes in. The fate of the Persian empire--and possibly the Judean people--hang in the balance and in the persuasive power of one ordinary woman.

I loved this amazing story that swept me away to the early years of King Cyrus's reign in Persia! Author Tessa Afshar kept me fully engaged in Cyrus's efforts to free the Israelites from captivity and it's apparent that she spent countless hours researching this time in Bible history. Her ability to weave facts with fiction has never been better, and the result is a riveting chronicle laced with biblical truths, historical details, and an encouraging reminder that none of us are insignificant in God's eye! The Peasant King has so many of the elements that I love in a story, including adventure, drama, and well-defined characters. We've met Keren, Jared, and Cyrus before, but the main focus is on Jemmah and Asher. Alone, they are fantastic, but together, they become a magical duo! I admire Jemmah's bravery, Asher's ingenuity, and the faith that they both possess. Yes, there's tantalizing romantic tension between them but their mutual respect and their humorous banter make their attraction even more appealing! This book is a sequel to The Hidden Prince, but it can certainly be considered a standalone. The Peasant King is a five-star read for me and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction. I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

A stirring adventure with a courageous heroine, set in the world of The Hidden Prince. A brilliant companion to Ms. Afshar's The Hidden Prince, that can also be read as a stand alone, bringing back beloved faces while introducing new ones. This book brings ancient history to life in vivid form, I loved learning more about a time that I was previously pretty ignorant about, and it was fun understanding the intricacies of that empire. Jemmah is a strong and courageous heroine, like her mother. I was touched by her determination to fight for the ones she loved, despite her own weaknesses. Asher is a brilliant innovator, I liked his friendship with Keren and how he is protective of Jemmah. This is a riveting historical read that pulled me into its pages from the very beginning. I loved how the book showed God's hand throughout the reign of a Persian king, and in the tiniest details of our lives. A captivating, and entertaining read from beginning to end, filled with pieces of wisdom to treasure. Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Page Turning Novel

5 out of 5 stars

Tessa Afshar takes us to ancient times and lands crafting an exciting story of intrigue, prophecies of Jeremiah and Isaiah answered, sweet romance, battles, humor, and characters you will fall in love with. If you have read The Hidden Prince, you have already been introduced to Keren, Jared, and Cyrus in their youth. Now we join them as adults along with new people to populate the pages of this adventure. Jemmah is my favorite new female character. She is strong, gifted, funny and has no idea how special she is. Her favorite saying “Fire and Lightning” tells you all about her personality. Asher is a new hero that you will be routing for as he faces his own demons. And for those who like to have a new critter to fall in love with, we have Gilead, the owl. As in all good Biblical fiction stories, the thread of redemption and faith run through the pages. God always shows up, often He accomplishes His plans little by little often not on our timeline. I received a free ARC copy of this book for my honest review.

The Strength of Women Personified

I received a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Important Note: Even though this is a standalone novel, you would truly benefit from reading The Hidden Price before reading The Peasant King. These two works are a saga that will draw you in to a world full of people who love God but struggle with fulfilling His Will in a world that doesn't know Him, all while fighting with the same battles we face today. If you're already a fan of Tessa Afshar's work, then you know what to expect and you will not be disappointed by this newest release. The Peasant King is full of the excitement, romance and Godly Instruction we have come to expect from the art of Ms. Afshar's pen. I am always so encouraged by the new vision of God's Love revealed to me in every novel. (Feels unfair to call it a novel when the Holy Spirit is doing so much real work on the pages.) My only criticism is that it ended too soon, but I’m going to take that as an unspoken promise that this is not the last time we’ll see Karen and Jemma. I promise, you will not be disappointed with The Peasant King, you’ll only want more.
