Description

About the Book

"Colette Marceau has been stealing jewels for nearly as long as she can remember, following the centuries-old code of honor instilled in her by her mother Annabel: take only from the cruel and unkind, and give to those in need. Never was their family tradition more important than seven decades earlier, during the Second World War, when Annabel and Colette worked side by side in Paris to fund the French Resistance. But one night in 1942, it all went wrong. Annabel was arrested by the Germans, and Colette's four-year-old sister Liliane disappeared in the chaos of the raid, along with an exquisite diamond bracelet sewn into the hem of her nightgown for safekeeping. Soon after, Annabel was executed, and Liliane's body was found floating in the Seine--but the bracelet was nowhere to be found. Seventy years later, Colette--who has 'redistributed' $30 million in jewels over the decades to fund many worthy organizations--has done her best to put her tragic past behind her, but her life begins to unravel when the long-missing bracelet suddenly turns up in a museum exhibit in Boston"--

Book Synopsis

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Kristin Harmel, the New York Times bestselling author who "is the best there is at sweeping historical drama" (Kelly Harms, author of The Seven Day Switch), returns with an electrifying new novel about two jewel thieves, a priceless bracelet that disappears in 1940s Paris, and a quest for answers in a decades-old murder.

Colette Marceau has been stealing jewels for nearly as long as she can remember, following the centuries-old code of honor instilled in her by her mother, Annabel: take only from the cruel and unkind, and give to those in need. Never was their family tradition more important than seven decades earlier, during the Second World War, when Annabel and Colette worked side by side in Paris to fund the French Resistance.

But one night in 1942, it all went wrong. Annabel was arrested by the Germans, and Colette's four-year-old sister, Liliane, disappeared in the chaos of the raid, along with an exquisite diamond bracelet sewn into the hem of her nightgown for safekeeping. Soon after, Annabel was executed, and Liliane's body was found floating in the Seine--but the bracelet was nowhere to be found.

Seventy years later, Colette--who has "redistributed" $30 million in jewels over the decades to fund many worthy organizations--has done her best to put her tragic past behind her, but her life begins to unravel when the long-missing bracelet suddenly turns up in a museum exhibit in Boston. If Colette can discover where it has been all this time--and who owns it now--she may finally learn the truth about what happened to her sister. But she isn't the only one for whom the bracelet holds answers, and when someone from her childhood lays claim to the diamonds, she's forced to confront the ghosts of her past as never before. Against all odds, there may still be a chance to bring a murderer to justice--but first, Colette will have to summon the courage to open her own battered heart.

I just love Kristin Harmel books and this one did not disappoint. It is a dual timeline of WWII and present day being 2018. It centers around a beautiful butterfly bracelet that can be split into two pieces which will look like lilies. The bracelet was made by a prominent jeweler commissioned by a Jewish man for his wife who had twins. The initials of the two children was on each bracelet so when they were grown they would both have a bracelet but before that their Mom would wear it as a single piece. Helene, the mom is Jewish and best friends with Annabel who is part of the underground network in Paris. Annabel is a jewel thief. She is like Robin Hood. She steals from the cruel and helps others in need. When her best friend and her family are seized by the German's Annabel is beside herself with grief. When she sees her friend's bracelet on the wrist of a German's girlfriend she decides to do what she thinks is right. She steals it. She then sews it into the hems of her girl's (Colette and Liliane) nightgowns for safe keeping. Unfortunately, someone reports her to the police and she is taken into custody. Her daughter Liliane is taken and found dead and her husband left town and Colette. Poor Colette has been filled with grief since that happened. She does though, still have the one bracelet that was in her nightgown. Oh, did I mention that Colette followed in her mother's footprints and steals jewelry. Getting into the present day, Colette sees that the other half of her bracelet will be on display in a museum and she is determined to find out who the original owner is. She feels that maybe she can find out what happened to her beloved sister, Liliane. From there you can not put the book down. Ms. Harmel does her magic of intertwining the lives of her characters and leaves you feeling thankful that you picked up this book. It is a beautiful story that I highly recommend. Thanks to #netgalley, #gallerybooks and @kristinharmel for an ARC of this great read. All opinions are my own.

Kristen Harmel evokes a wide variety of emotions from the sorrows and suffering of war; the pain of loss and betrayal; the weight of grief and regret; to the delight and relief of finding forgiveness, love, and personal connection. Almost ninety looks very good on Colette Marceau, with her family lost to her in the war, and only two close friends, Colette still dabbles in the family business as a jewel thief and, as a descendant of Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. She does not, however, target anyone who has not done something to, in her opinion, deserve being relieved of their jewels. Even the best intentions can become tangled up leading to unintended and undeserved circumstances. Colette must come to terms with the people and years that were stolen from her, as well as the moments and opportunities she relinquished on her own. This book is itself a jewel with its sparkling moments and valuable insights. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau from Simon & Schuster via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Colette learned to steal jewelry from people from the age of 10. Her mother taught her as it was part of their family history/ tradition. Colette would steal in order to give donations to organizations, including the one she founded herself, the Boston Center for Holocaust Education. This story alternates from 1939, Colette’s experiences as a thief from childhood through WWII to 2018, when Colette is nearly ninety-years-old and still a jewelry thief. Will she eventually get caught as a thief, or will she quit while she is ahead? At the same time, Colette is trying to figure out who is responsible for killing her sister at a young age and where her mother’s beloved jewels ended up. Will Colette be successful? I love a dual-timeline historical fiction story! Kristin Harmel’s writing will capture your attention from the beginning with flawlessly going between time periods. It quickly becomes a page turner to find out Colette’s fate. I loved the mystery incorporated into this story, which made for an entertaining read! I highly recommend it if you enjoy Historical Fiction. Perfect for book clubs as it will lead to many interesting discussions!

Like many of her other historical novels, it is set in the beautiful “City of Light” with a heartwarming WWII story. The narrative has its own way of sparkling with beautiful diamonds, emeralds and jewels. This book was engaging with two timelines from the 1940s in Paris and then 2018 in Boston. The only parts missing were photos of a prized bracelet that went through a lot of hands. Even though it was well described, I wanted to see it. It's another great novel by Kristin Harmel and also a good choice for book clubs.

Rooting for the Thieves

This is such a great book, I loved this from beginning to end. Is stealing ever a good thing? Well I was rooting for the thieves in this read, actually all the way to the end, and what an ending! This is a dual time read, from 2018 in the Boston, Massachusetts area and then back to when the evil was consuming Europe, and riding the world of a group of people, that they hate! This is a story that kept on giving, yes, we see heartbreak, the loss of love ones and friends, but we also see sweet romance, and finding some of what was lost! Danger is everywhere, and yet with diamonds, there are those who are willing to give the ultimate to fight for justice! Come and get lost with Colette and Robin Hood! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Gallery Books, and was not required to give a positive review.
