About the Book
Meet Etta Maxwell whose determination to report stories using a male pseudonym puts her in conflict with a Brockton firefighter when the Grover Shoe Factory explodes in 1905.Book Synopsis
A Socialite in Disguise Seeks Truth and Justice Collect a new series of six historical romances. When life seems weighed down by challenges, there are always pillars of enduring hope and love to be discovered. Henrietta "Etta" Maxwell, heiress to the Maxwell fortune, is a hard-hitting investigative reporter for The Enterprise Daily. The catch? Etta must pen her columns under the nom de plume, Henry Mason--a fact that routinely puts a knot in her knickerbockers. Leo Eriksson is a second-generation firefighter with a passion for rendering aid to those in need. When Leo discovers that Henry Mason is really Henrietta Maxwell, the fire department's wealthy benefactress, he agrees to keep her identity secret. After a sudden blast rocks the Grover Shoe Factory, Leo and Etta team up to determine if the explosion is related to a series of suspicious fires in the area. But sparks fly when Leo accuses Etta of negating the human side of the disaster in her determination to get a good story. When an unnamed source reveals Etta's secret identity to a rival reporter, she falsely accuses Leo of being the informant. As the truth comes to light, Etta must persuade Leo to give her a second chance or lose the only man she's ever loved. What a fun novel that explores a time of rapid change in our history! The Undercover Heiress of Brockton deftly weaves the historical facts of the Grover Shoe Factory disaster with a delightful heroine and swoony hero, a little bit of mystery, and a whole lot of gumption. I really enjoyed the balance between the spunk of forward-thinking Henrietta Maxwell and the quiet service and humility of Leo Eriksson. The descriptions of early 1900s firefighting and the newspaper industry were especially intriguing to me as well. What a ways we've come in terms of technology, but oh the lessons we can learn from studying where we've been! This is the kind of historical fiction I really enjoy reading-- something so immersive that you blink and it takes a moment to come back to the present when you put the book down-- it flows so smoothly and the writing naturally draws the reader into the action and time period. I also really appreciated how Henrietta and Leo lived out their faith in their vocations- both the ones they wanted and the ones they tolerated. I loved the way the author brought everything together in the end-- such a sweet ending! Highly recommend!

A delightful and sweet read by Kelly J. Goshorn! Full of wit and resilience throughout tragedy, The Undercover Heiress of Brockton is a lovely historical romance! The main characters, Etta and Leo, were well written and extremely relatable. The tragedy of the Grover Shoe Factory Explosion was such a terrible and interesting history. I enjoyed that the author showed the aftermath and effects on the community afterwards, but also showed the heroics and courage of many people. The themes of faith and hope were realistically powerful throughout without being preachy. An inspiring and uplifting Christian Historical fiction piece! I highly recommend The Undercover Heiress of Brockton! I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.

When an unnamed source reveals Etta’s secret identity to a rival reporter, she falsely accuses Leo of being the informant. As the truth comes to light, Etta must persuade Leo to give her a second chance or lose the only man she’s ever loved. Easily read as a standalone, I highly recommend The Undercover Heiress of Brockton if you enjoy historical fiction based on real events. Etta is a strong heroine who refuses to be looked down on just because she’s a woman. She has dreams and skills that she wants to use. Leo is wonderful with his passion for helping others. This story is a heartfelt journey that explores faith, the bonds of family, the healing nature of forgiveness, and the bravery it takes to live as the person God created you to be. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.

The Undercover Heiress of Brockton is a beautiful love story set against a fascinating and devastating event in history. Etta endears herself to the reader immediately, and from page one, I was invested in her not only finding her happily ever after, but also getting her well-deserved byline. Leo certainly proved himself a worthy hero for Etta, and their love story was incredibly sweet. Despite the serious nature of the shoe factory fire disaster, and Etta's pursuit of her own byline by reporting about the disaster and several arsons around the city, there were several laugh-out-loud moments, and plenty of witty banter. I enjoyed every minute of this delightful book! I received an ARC copy of this book and was not required to leave a review. This opinion is my own.

Author Kelly J. Goshorn shares a compelling story based on true events that occurred in 1905. I'd never heard of the devastating explosion and fire that occurred in "Shoe City" and the repercussions from this tragedy. Newspaper reporter Henry Mason and fireman Leo Erikkson join forces to find the cause of the disaster, but there's much more for them to discover! This is an intriguing look at journalism during the early 1900s. Socialite and heiress Henrietta Maxwell used the pseudonym Henry Mason because of the prejudice against female reporters, and her efforts to 'scoop' this story could be the break she needed. What would happen if Etta's identity was revealed? I loved the budding friendship between Etta and Leo, and I was impressed that both of them were strong believers. Their relationship wasn't without conflict and drama, but Goshorn's plot allowed them to put their faith into action. Mystery, history, romance, and faith! What more could you ask for in a historical fiction novel? I recommend The Undercover Heiress of Brockton to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
