In order to assist our customers in figuring out the right amount of ice to use, we provide ice guides on many of our product pages. These provide ice to food ratios and the amount of time you can expect contents to stay cold based on the ratios you use. Please note that claims of “Holds Ice” or “Still Ice” are based on an industry standard testing protocol. The protocol mandates that a cooler be filled to capacity with cubed ice (100% filled with ice cubes for the test). This standardized way of testing allows customers to compare the expected maximum performance of different sizes and brands of coolers in a standardized and dependable way. For example, when the cooler is 100% full with ice, the ice retention time is up to 3 days and when the cooler is half full with ice and half full with contents, the ice retention time is approximately 1.5 days. Something most consumers may not know is that a cooler’s performance is directly related to the amount of ice placed inside it. This is the same for coolers all across the market. Results will also vary according to the ambient temperature, which is the temperature outside the bag and in the bag before filling. Many factors can impact the length of time any items stay cold or frozen, including the type of ice. Cubed ice is best, similar to what is available at most corner stores or service stations. Also, the starting temperature of the contents, the temperature surrounding the ice, etc. can all impact the melting point. Ice packs or ice substitutes with a lower freezing point are preferable on extra hot days and starting with already cold contents. Ice packs or ice substitutes can also focus the cold better than loose ice cubes.
