After reading One Wrong Move last year, I knew I was in for a treat with Two Seconds Too Late, Dani Pettrey’s second Jeopardy Falls novel, and I was not disappointed! Two Seconds Too Late opens with a bang—literally—as a bullet barely misses Riley MacLeod mere moments before she is forced to take a man’s life. Now drowning in guilt, this plucky PI receives an envelope at home containing a nondescript locker key and an ominous message, “Keep it safe at all costs. I’m trusting you,” hours before finding out her new friend, Kelly Frazier, has mysteriously disappeared from a high-end resort during a couples’ retreat. Could the two be related? Tasked with uncovering the truth about her friend’s disappearance, Riley MacLeod goes undercover at the resort retreat, posing as a couple with her fellow PI, Greyson Chadwick. The two quickly discover that all is not as it seems—and they find that this case is way more complex and dangerous than they could have ever imagined. As a whole, Two Seconds Too Late is an excellent story, full of mystery and suspense, twists and turns, humor and romance. Riley and Greyson are both interesting, complex characters, who bring out the best in one another. It was truly a delight to see them grow separately and together throughout the pages of this book. I would describe the major theme of this novel as surrender, specifically surrender to God. While the book itself is not overtly Christian, the message of surrender is deftly and delicately woven through every chapter, and the reader is invited to consider what aspects of their own life have yet to be laid at the feet of the Savior. In that vein, some noteworthy quotes include: “Talking about it helps. Holding things inside only lets them fester—grow bigger.” “Stop carrying what isn’t yours…” “Surrender it to God, luv. Let Him work on the part of your heart that’s still wrestling with it.” Readers who are fans of Kristen Heitzmann, Dee Henderson, Colleen Coble, and Lynn Blackburn will enjoy Two Seconds Too Late. And I am positive that they, like me, will be eagerly awaiting the next installment of Pettrey’s Jeopardy Falls series.
