Book Synopsis

For fans of Funny in Farsi and Born a Crime, language lovers, and anyone carving out a life in the in-between, a cross-cultural memoir--spanning Iran, France, the United States, and Switzerland--that traces one woman's journey from exile to reinvention.

What does it mean to belong everywhere and nowhere at once?

When six-year-old Négar Chahkhalili flees revolutionary Tehran, she leaves behind not just a country but also a sensory world of language, food, and family that continues to shape her life from afar. As she starts over in exile--first at Catholic school in the South of France, later at university in Paris and Boston, and eventually raising a family in Switzerland--she navigates cultures, languages, and layered identities.

This is a story of displacement and belonging--of what it means to carry home within you, even at a distance. With wit, warmth, and self-deprecating humor, Chahkhalili captures the experience of living between worlds and adapting to new cultural codes while trying to preserve a connection to one's origins. A perfect choice for readers who loved Persepolis and Americanah, this lyrical memoir of migration, identity, and the enduring pull of one's roots across continents offers a rich, immersive journey through place, language, and self.

Review Quotes

"More than the memoir of a person who has lived in many places, this is an account of what it feels like inside to be pulled away from one's home, overwhelmed by change, unfamiliar customs, and languages, and yet to find a way to grow, adapt, and internalize the values of these differences. Chahkhalili's account of her experiences transcends autobiography but offers a road map to changing with the terrain and feeling at home when away from home."--James Hollis, PhD, Jungian analyst and author of Living Between Worlds

"A gem about loss and resilience, full of heart and humor. I fell in love with Négar's stubborn resolve to claw her way out of gut-wrenching moments in exile, from childhood into motherhood. I read the entire book in a couple of sittings. The writing was so sharp and vivid, I could hardly breathe by the time I reached the end."--Shahrzad Elghanayan, journalist and author of Titan of Tehran

"At the crossroads of East and West, memory and possibility, Négar Chahkhalili tells a deeply human story of becoming. Through the languages of love and loss, food and place, poetry and dance, she reveals how the worlds we move through continue to shape us long after we leave them behind. A beautiful reminder that home is not a single place, but all the worlds we carry within us."--Stephanie Szostak, actor and author of Self!sh
