A: This novel has almost nothing in common with the musical. It's NC-17 rated & extremely dark & cynical. Winnie Holzman wrote the musical with songwriter Stephen Schwartz, who both also wrote the film.

Deceptive cover. The movie was based on the Broadway musical, not the book.
The cover of this book says "Now a major motion picture" and that is very deceptive because this book *inspired* a Broadway musical, and that Broadway musical is now a major motion picture. I read Wicked 20 years ago and I think it is a good book, I would give the book itself a five stars. But it is nothing but a money grab to put the picture of the PG movie on the cover of an MA book. Luckily the first chapter has enough "inappropriate material" in it for people to know what they are about to get into. (I know that is incredibly vague, but I had to rewrite that sentence three times for Target to allow me to post this review.) Would I personally recommend this book? Yes. But I would first mention that it is more of a meditation on morality, oppression, propaganda, and free will than a the fun romp that the movie was.

Very inappropriate ADULT book
This book is ADULT content and the “movie tie in” cover and store placement is VERY misleading. I don’t recommend this book for anyone in general but I especially think parents need to be warned this is in no way like the movie and is not age appropriate for anyone under 18.

Not a YA book
I picked up this book for my 13 year old because she loved the movie. I thought this would be a great way for her to take up reading novels. We found this book in the kid section of the store. I assumed it was for kids/Young adults and was sooooo wrong. This book is for adults. Very s3xual explicit story line and over words that I don’t want my 13 yr old saying. This is irresponsible of Target trying to pull this off as a kids book. Stop putting movie cover on books that have zero to do with the movie.

It’s so funny how all of you really don’t know anything and just assume 😭😭 like if you followed before the movie came out you woulda known better. Even a google search will tell you abt this book. If you rating 1 star then you deserve it. All you smut girlies will love this.

Love the book, hate Target
I love this book and ordered it after the release of the movie. I get the book today and immediately from the packaging it’s 1) Ripped on the cover 2) Got some dumb sticker on the title page covering the movie art. And yes, it’s the kind that leaves residue. Either go in person or order from somewhere else.

NOT FOR KIDS - DO NOT PURCHASE
This book is NOTHING like the musical/movie. I don't know why they put the movie poster on this. It's misleading. The only thing that Stephen Schwarz took from the book is the names and the idea of the witches going to college. It is not a book for kids. It is highly inapropriate and deals with adult themes. Look it up on sparknotes before buying.

Hey Target! How about we stop putting promotional stickers smack dab on the cover of things we sell? This was supposed to be a gift and they put a very hard to remove sticker directly on Elphaba’s face… how stupid.

I don’t like it. I’m hoping the movie will be better. I think this book will be nothing like the movie. Likely the movie is based on the other 3 books in the series. This book is just a lot of yapping with nothing happening. Does seem like a fairy tale world!

Love This Book
Book is a great read, but has very adult themes and innuendo throughout. Story, film, and musical all echo each other in theme but offer different emotional and intellectual experiences. Design of the book is nice for a soft-back book. Spine is relatively flexible and finish on the cover is matte so as not to retain oily fingerprints.
