Frozen shrimp are sold either precooked (thaw-and-serve or heat-and-serve) or as raw shrimp labeled that they ‘need to be fully cooked’ before eating. Some precooked items—such as shrimp rings—include thaw-and-serve or simple reheating instructions.
Typical instructions include thawing in the refrigerator overnight (about 12 hours) or in cold water for 10–15 minutes. Cooking methods often list skillet or boiling for about 4–5 minutes; breaded items provide oven or air-fryer times (for example 14–16 minutes in the oven or about 11 minutes in an air fryer).
Some packages recommend cooking raw shrimp to an internal temperature of 145°F. Breaded or pre-cooked items may list 165°F as the target internal temperature for finished cooking.
Some frozen shrimp are precooked and sold as thaw-and-serve or heat-and-serve products, often with included sauce packets (for example cocktail sauce or sweet chili sauce). Other frozen shrimp packages are raw and labeled as needing to be fully cooked before eating.
You can find breaded options such as coconut shrimp labeled gluten-free, and items promoted as having no artificial flavors or preservatives and no synthetic colors. Some breaded shrimp products are also certified by BAP.
