Satisfied, but I didn't have grand expectations
I really liked the look of these chairs, but I hesitated because of the number of negative reviews which indicated they were of poor quality and came broken or broke shortly after purchase. I live very close to a Target store so I decided to go for it and if they arrived broken, or looked like they would not be sturdy once assembled, I could pack everything off to the store for a return relatively easily.
I decided to keep them, but did find an issue which might account for at least one of the problems where the front legs broke soon after use. The frame is held to the front legs by two dowels and one screw per leg. The legs have sunken metal fittings and the frame has a groove that the screw goes into and attaches to the legs. The problem is that the angle of the routed groove makes it very difficult to seat the screws properly. Plus, the screws are meant to be used with a hex driver, and they send this completely awkward and ineffective hex key tool for tightening the screws. Unfortunately, the screw was not properly seated and became cross-threaded and got stuck not quite all the way in.
I bet if this happens to other people and they don't realize the screw isn't seated properly, it might cause a joint failure.
Eventually we got one chair built. I have sat in the chair a few times, and it feels fine so far. I am a smallish person, and I don't feel it is too rickety or unsteady. I don't know, however, if I will feel safe having very heavy people sit on it.
I gave this set 4 stars because, well, they are cheap, and they aren't perfect. But, if you buy something in this price range what really can you expect? Over all, I think you get something reasonably nice for the price. I docked them one star mostly because they are not designed to assemble in a way that is likely to be problem-free.
If you have a limited budget, like the way these look, are reasonable in your expectations, are willing to take your time and be extra careful with assembly, and are usually going to seat people of smaller to moderate weight (less than 250#), I would say give these a chance. As long as they don't arrive broken, you will probably be satisfied.
On the other hand, if you are not good with tools, are impatient in assembling furniture that has some lame tools and awkward positions to screw bolts into, have kids or rowdier family members that are hard on furniture where they rock on the back legs/drag themselves up to the table without fully lifting up their weight, or have a very large sized family, this might not be the chair-set for you.
