Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.

From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine all together, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light skin individuals, leaving behind a visible white-residue on our darker skin sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.

In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white-cast.

Today, BGS is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you.     Be ware

    Was looking for a good sunscreen to use while walking. Used this one two times and instantly broke out in a red itchy rash. Immediately discontinued use had to put Aloe Vera on my face to relive the irritation.

    Love This Sunscreen

    Make it Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen

    NO CHALKY WHITE FILM ON BLACK SKIN

    I am a black women. I am not familiar with sunscreen products at all. I have never used sunscreen before. However, now that I am older I need a prescription menopause face cream and My doctor recommended I use a sunscreen on my face as the last step with my Estradiol Face Cream to protect my skin because the use of estrogen + niacinamide + tretinoin cream will make my skin sensitive to sun rays. I purchased popular expensive Name brand face Sunscreen with SPF and they all leave a very visible chalky white film on my skin and makes my face look a horrible dull grey! I am very disappointed because their website specifically states that it will NOT leave a white cast on my skin but it did. Obviously, those products was Not made with black women in mind. I do not wear makeup/ foundation cream. I was in search for a face sunscreen I can worn alone. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT I FOUND BLACK GIRL SUNSCREEN! The Make It Matte 45 gel face sunscreen is perfect! It glides on smoothly. Just a little goes along way. After washing my face I apply a small amount and it makes my skin feel so soft and gives my face a wonderful Glow! No makeup, No foundation cream just my own natural beautiful brown skin. It does not leave a chalky white film on my skin. It does Not turn my face dull and grey like other sunscreens. I can wear it alone on its own or layered on top of my Estrogen Face Cream. FINALLY A LINE IF SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS FORMULATED TO NOURISH AND PROTECT BLACK PEOPLE MELANATED BROWN SKIN - I LOVE IT!

    Not All it's Cracked Up to Be

    After a poor experience with BGS Kids, I tried switching to the Make It Matte formula. I tend to be very oily especially when wearing sunscreen, so I was excited to try something that wouldn't give me a white cast and make me look greasy. The formula is very similar to the SuperGoop sunscreen that's gone viral as it has a silicone smooth texture that feels like it creates a film on top of the skin. While I will say the first few days of testing the product out I did stay less greasy for longer but eventually, the grease did appear especially in my t-zone. Reapplication only made the oiliness worse, I noticed that the product moves throughout the day. Even when I avoid areas closely around my mouth and eyes, I feel it slide into those places almost within 30 minutes of applying the product. This happens even when I'm not sweating or doing any activity that would cause this. After almost 9 days of using the product I started to get an irritation rash around my eyes and on the tops of my cheeks. Sad about the turn out of this product, and I'm out of my money on top that!

    Greasy and stayed greasy

    Made me greasy and didn't get better with time. I didn't blend with my skin and just made blush, foundation, and eyebrows, mascara oily. If you have mature skin and are very, very dry this would probably work for you. I couldn't wear more than 30 minutes. I had to wash face and put different sunscreen on. Also made my eyes water and sting, also my hairline stung wearing this sunscreen. Don't recommend.

    Shirt finish. . . . & plays well with makeup.

I've not been using it as often as I should, but I do love that I can apply it to my face without any burning or stinging. Also the matte finish is a game changer!
