Q: What is the ideal size mattress for the top mattress? I want to make sure that it covers the opening in the back.

A: Hi sherry, the top bed can fit a standard queen/twin xl size mattress depending on bed size chosen. We recommend a mattress thickness of at least 10 inches to cover the gap between the bed and headboard.
