While this works well as a sunblock, the smell is terrible. I can only describe it as a baby powder smell gone bad. It's so bad that we're considering just throwing out the rest of it.

Despite Target touting this as the same as the former sunscreen but in different packaging, it is NOT. The previous sport sunscreen lotion was fragrance free. This one in the tube has a very strong, perfume-y smell. If you don't like fragrance, definitely do not buy this one.

I used to love this stuff, but the new formula smells absolutely disgusting. I cannot wear it around other people.

Do not buy this sunscreen. They changed the formula and made it scented for god knows what reason and it's either that or some other chemical that they changed that is a massive eye irritant. Get literally any other brand of sunscreen so you can actually use it on your face.
Bring the old stuff back please!!!

This was my go to before they changed it (I work at a pool) New formula is awful! They added a super strong cologne smell and the texture is now very oily feeling and pills off my skin very easily.

The odor of this sunscreen smells like a shag carpet that has been micturated upon. It is a truly vile odor and I do not know how it got past any of the quality control folks. Do not buy.

Smells, which I would overlook if it actually worked. Did not stop me from getting more color than I wanted.

Used this product twice and it’s smells awful it really irritated my child’s eyes to the point she wouldn’t stop screaming. We flushed her eyes out multiple times and had to give her Benadryl. Do better target.

Feels terrible on my skin, it’s slippery and oily, and as time goes on it “pills” into little clumps if you end up rubbing your skin. Seriously this sunscreen is so oily. The clothes I wore are darkened around the insides of the collars and sleeves due to oil staining. The reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is that it was effective at preventing sunburn.

I had bought this in years past and liked it. It was very similar to banana boat. They didn’t just change the packaging they must have also changed the formula. It smells and is very greasy. Also pills and that was never the case with the one before.
Scent is HORRIBLE

Previous versions of Target sunscreen lotion were unscented, but this one has a NASTY scent. I put a little on my nose an hour ago and am still feeling nauseated. Plus, as a bonus, it's waterproof so it doesn't wash off! Never again. Ruined a great product.
Smells like URINE!

Why does this smell so bad? Wish I could return it. Brought it to a party and everyone started gagging. It smells like a pee soaked comforter from the 80s.

I've used an earlier version of this product for years - it was effective and an excellent value. Best of all, it had no fragrance, which is surprisingly hard to find. So I was pleased to get more when my supply ran out. I noted the new packaging but assumed the product was the same. Wrong! This new formulation is heavier and, to my dismay, has a horrible smell due to an added fragrance. A big dud. Why change something that was just fine? I don't get it. It was so bad we threw it out after a couple of uses.

We are particular about our sunblock, and I’ve been a fan for years of the Target brand.. they changed it, for the BETTER. It smells great now! I also have a kid who tans beautifully like the copper tone kid and one who is so pale she is almost translucent. This protects both of them, and me - an early 40’s mom, too!

This lotion was great for my sensitive skin. I normally breakout from certain types of sunblock, so end up spending a lot of money on name brands with less chemicals. I had forgot mine at home and ran to Target and bought this as it was the first I had seen. I was pleasantly surprised by the scent, the absorption, and the actual protection it provides.

Overbearing cologne type smell in this sunscreen. I bought this to use on my kids ages 3-10 and I will be returning because of the very strong smell.

Up&Up sunscreen used to be perfect. It worked very well and it didn't contain any scents that were off-putting or triggered any reactions. But between 2024 and 2025 they re-branded with a new bottle shape that easily slips out of your hands when your hands have sunscreen on them (gone are the ridges that stopped this from happening), and there is now an atrociously perfumy smell that 1.) doesn't even smell good and 2.) causes my eyes to react. Why Target chose to change their branding from reliable every-day products to "aesthetically pleasing" but functionally unusable products, I have no idea. Target, if it ain't broke, don't "fix" it!

I have been using Up and Up sport sunscreen for years. It was the only sunscreen that didn't burn my eyes. Seems the formula changed along with the label/branding and it irritates my eyes horribly. Please change back to the original formula! Still works and I don't mind the scent, but oh god my eyes.
