Ces dernières années, on observe en linguistique française et galloromane un dialogue renouvelé entre les recherches historiques et variationnelles. Alors que les diachroniciens tentent de retracer la trajectoire de la diffusion de nouvelles variantes dans l'espace géographique et social, les spécialistes de la variation s'intéressent de plus en plus à l'évolution historique de la distribution de ces variantes. Cependant, la variation géographique et sociale ne reste que partiellement et indirectement saisissable en diachronie sur la base de la documentation textuelle, parfois aussi à travers les sources métalinguistiques.

Les travaux réunis dans le présent ouvrage illustrent les défis empiriques et méthodologiques, mais aussi la fécondité de tels projets de recherche, qui vont de l'analyse philologique et de l'historiographie à la linguistique des variétés et à la dialectologie, à la linguistique des langues de spécialité et à la phraséologie.
