Q: What is the outside width at the bottom of the box? --- These boxes usually narrow quite a bit from the top to the bottom so that the bottom dimension is smaller. The shelf I'd like to put it on has a lip so I need to know if it will fit within it.

Most household storage purposes do not require suggested weight limitations. Our products have not been specifically tested for various weight potential, and we suggest consumers not overload them or stack more than three high. This could cause distortion or eventual damage. When storing items away, use good judgment and be mindful of the weight in each tote and place the heaviest tote on the bottom.

Q: Can this bin be kept outside to be used for part of a feral cat shelter ?

Rain, snow, and other weather can penetrate the lid. If using it outdoors, we suggest you cover it with a waterproof tarp, store it under a roof, or inside a garage, shed or other building to help prevent drying out from sun exposure, and to keep moisture from penetrating the unit.
