Q: How many pounds do u think that this bookcase will hold.

submitted by Spink - 5 years ago
  • A: I've definitely put at least 60-70 lbs worth of books on each shelf. I'd say I've put even more on some and so far no buckling. Have had the shelves for more than a year and a half and very pleased with them.

submitted byDN - 5 years ago
  • A: no idea how many lbs but i have stacks of science/medical books on each shelf and it's doing fine. had it going on 2 years

submitted byAD - 3 years ago
  • A: The assembly instructions clearly state that each shelf was designed to hold a maximum of 65 pounds.

    submitted byWayne B - 1 year ago
  • A: Really not sure. The shelves are very sturdy though. We use it for holding photo albums, scrapbooks and other books. Several of the books are heavy college textbooks. Hope that helps.

submitted byCindy - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Spink - Thanks for the question. Each shelf holds a maximum of 65 lbs. Have a great day! - Matt

Q: Do I have to utilize the backing or can that be left off? I am wanting my paint color to peak through but don't know if the backing provides structural support.

submitted by boymom - 5 years ago
  • A: you can definitely leave the back off. it doesn't provide support.

submitted bymom of 3 - 5 years ago
  • A: I left mine off, it looks great and allows me to have a room divider besides

submitted byFonty - 5 years ago
  • A: Hello boymom- Thanks for asking on this tall and sleek Threshold Bookcase! As its intended design and use, we’d suggest utilizing the backing of this bookcase. Happy shopping! -Erinn

submitted byTarget Team Member - 5 years ago

  • A: I agree with mom of 3 - the back cardboard provides little to no support. It would be fine to not use that. Screwing in the back also was the most time consuming step so you would save yourself a lot of work.

submitted bySparklesa - 2 years ago

Q: Is the bookcase in a large carton? Will I need two people to pick up this bookcase carton?

submitted by londie - 5 years ago
  • A: Very heavy, definitely requires two people to lift the box.

submitted bySparklesa - 2 years ago
  • A: It is boxed in a carton and it would be difficult for one person to carry without a dolly of some kind. It’s manageable with two.

submitted byDoug - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi londie - Thanks for asking about this popular bookcase. This is a pretty large box. Its shipped in a box about 74.5 inches length x 16.0 inches width x 6.75 inches height. The box also weighs roughly 64.5 pounds. Hope this information is helpful! - Melissa

Q: how difficult is it to put this together?

submitted by lorraine from gates - 5 years ago
  • A: It wasn’t very difficult, but it did take longer than expected. It took us (two people) about two hours to put together, and then another 30 minutes to figure out how to install the anti-tip strap to the wall. That step requires a power drill to make a hole in the wall. Everything else is easy with a Phillips screwdriver. Screwing in the cardboard piece to the back of the unit took close to an hour as there aren’t pre-drilled holes for that step and it uses 46 screws. Directions were clear and easy to follow though, parts are all well labeled and the hardware is packaged in multiple little pouches so it’s easy to find what you need for each step.

submitted bySparklesa - 2 years ago
  • A: I have two of these that I put together by myself and didn't have any problems. The hardest part for me was attaching the back just because there aren't pre drilled holes around the sides of the frame. The instructions are clear, I didn't have any trouble following them or have missing pieces or anything like that.

    submitted byKelly R - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Lorraine from gates – Thanks for asking! If you scroll down on the page the manufacture has the assembly instructions you can view. It does take adult assembly. I hope this helps. – Anita

Q: When fully assembled is it very sturdy or does it have some wobble too it? I will be storing many books and need something that can handle the weight

submitted by Kurt R - 5 years ago
  • A: I have had this bookshelf for YEARS and is still as sturdy today as it was when I purchased it and first put it together. It has made it through 3 moves and 4 of the 5 shelves have been filled with NURSING TEXTBOOKS (heavy!!)

    submitted byNicole J - 5 years ago
  • A: The bookcase comes with brackets to secure the bookcase to the wall.

submitted bySadie Jean - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Kurt R – Thanks for asking! This book case has a maximum shelf weight capacity of 65.0 pounds. I hope this will hold all of your books. Thanks for stopping by. - Anita

Q: Is the color of this bookcase a dark brown or a black? (it says espresso)

submitted by MC - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi! The bookcase is a Dark brown - like a coffee bean

submitted byHeidi - 5 years ago
  • A: Hello MC- We’re glad you stopped by to checkout this modern bookcase from Threshold! The bookcase color-espresso is more so a beautiful dark brown. We hope this helps! -Erinn

  • A: The color is not consistent for the espresso version from batch to batch. Some have a red tone and others are more of a brown black. If you are set on a specifng tone I would check before buying.

Q: It's solid wood? What type of wood i.e. what type of tree is it from? Thank you.

submitted by Marbo - 5 years ago
  • A: The shelves are MDF and the load bearing corners are wood. The sides are made of the same thin cardboard that is used for the backing.

submitted by - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Marbo - We think this bookcase is a great place to store or display your things! It's made of pine hardwood with a melamine surface, and the backing is MDF. Hope it works well for you. - Shelly

submitted byShelly - 5 years ago

  • A: I do not think it is wood at all. it is very light and it is very wobbly when you finish putting it together.

    submitted byEnlucas08 - 5 years ago

Q: How much assembly is required? Thanks.

submitted by d - 5 years ago
  • A: The bookshelves come completely unassembled. If you have a little experience putting together pre-fab furniture, these are not difficult to put together. If you don't have any experience, you might need some help- the instructions aren't fantastic for a beginner. I have a lot of experience and it still took me about 45 minutes to put together each unit.

submitted byvgclairisch - 5 years ago
  • A: Assembly was easy and the directions were very well labeled and clear but it did take about 2 hours. I guess we are beginners at the pre-fab furniture game!

Q: I see that three of the five shelves are adjustable, do you know which three? Does it include the bottom shelf? Also, are the holes and pegs on the sides or at the back?

submitted by targetcustomer1 - 5 years ago
  • A: The fixed shelves are the bottom and the middle ones. The peg holes are in the sides.

submitted bybob - 5 years ago
  • A: The holes for the pegs are in the front and back of the shelf near the sides. The 3 movable shelves are the top, the 3rd from the top and 4th from the top.

submitted byCasey - 5 years ago
  • A: Is the a way that I can adjust the shelves so i can get 4 shelves 12.5+"for lp.s. Any x-space does not matter. I'd like to order 2 today.

submitted byDon - 2 years ago

Q: Do the legs curve out a bit or are they perfectly straight? I want to put several together and fit onto one wall.

submitted by EJ - 5 years ago
  • A: They are straight on the outside. The curve you see in the picture is from the inner cut. We have our 4 shelves lined along the wall side-by-side and they are perfectly flush.

submitted bymelanieml - 5 years ago
  • A: The legs are straight. You could place multiple bookcases together.

submitted bybob - 5 years ago
  • A: If they curve at all, it is just a little. If you're putting them side by side, you may have to sand a bit, but not much at all.

Poor Quality materials, not sturdy enough for heavy books. If you tighten the bolts a little too much the material will split. Once assembled it leans forward, I dont trust that it wont fall over even when anchored to the wall. Honesty, I would rather spend the money on an Ikea bookcase next time.

I love books and I have lots of heavy leather bound hardbacks and text books. In the past I had other bookshelves that would always sag under the weight. These don’t and are probably one of the best non hardwood shelves out there. I bought my original two about ten years ago and just bought three more to join the other two because I love them so much. They are classy looking, sturdy, and a lot lighter than hardwood. (I have the black ones)

I like that the pieces are thicker than other bookcases I’ve seen. I also like the height of the shelf options. It did come with some dings and scratches, but I was able to cover them up with black permanent marker. It is expensive than other bookcases, and the black is often out of stock. Don’t delay if it’s available because it will go fast!

I waited almost two weeks to receive this shelf and when it arrived I noticed it had been repackaged. I inspected all the pieces and sure enough there is chunk of wood missing from one of the outside pieces. Clearly it was a return and they just shipped it right back out for someone else to deal with the headache of having to return it instead of putting it where it belongs- in the trash.

Good shelf, a few issues

3 out of 5 stars
Susanna - 3 months ago, Verified purchaser
Overall, I like this shelf. It’s very pretty and looks great in my bedroom. However, I’m still incredibly annoyed with a few things. First, a few of the part came damaged. Not anything to compromise the structural integrity, but still very unfortunate. Pre-drilled screws had cracked the wood around them, a shelf had a corner torn off, and the back panels were pretty scuffed up. Not ideal. Second, assembly was…a mix of emotions. The majority of putting it together was easy, but getting the back panel (and all 45 screws) put into place was a nightmare. Wouldn’t have been too bad if more than 4 of them had pre-drilled holes, but for some reason they chose not to do that. It took me over 2 hours to assemble this shelf, a lot of it being spent on the back panel. And third, it was an absolute mess to assemble. The box it came in was a little banged up, and the styrofoam was obliterated. Little flecks of the stuff were all over everything and incredibly hard to clean off. I’m still finding them in various rooms of the house. Again, overall I really like the shelf, but I do feel like these issues should be addressed. If none of these things bother you too much, then this is a great option for you. I’d recommend it as long as you have patience and aren’t too upset by a few flaws.

Pretty, Functional & Sturdy

Laurelco - 3 months ago
I love these shelves. I was looking for something sturdy, functional as well as pretty. These fit the bill. I have 2 of the 5-shelf ones, and one of the 3-shelf, all in white. I have all 3 of them sitting flush (side by side). The flat sides make this possible. The trim and curved inside legs give it a nice finish. The adjustable shelves make it very functional. I have the shelves filled with books, several of which are very heavy textbooks, and interior decorating books. There is no sagging or wobbliness. Assembly was fine, better if you have a drill (I put one together with a screwdriver). The only difficult bit is putting on the back—you have to hold it in place while screwing in all the little screws, which are not pre-drilled. Note: I do not agree with others, that you can leave the back off. Someone else assembled one without it, and it is significantly less sturdy (leans and wobbles). Also, if you assemble this wrong, there is no way you’re getting those cams off, so make sure you’ve got it right. The instructions are easy to follow and everything is labeled. If you’ve put together furniture before, you shouldn’t have a problem, and possibly even if you haven’t. It’s a great shelf and I can highly recommend after several years of use, including surviving a couple of moves.

I bought the color “rustic” in 2 of the big book shelves and 3 of the 3 shelved ones and the color is consistent on all of them. They are sturdy and once you put one together the rest are far easier to assemble. Assembly for the first one took about an hour and 20 minutes. The rest maybe took 30-45 minutes. We used power tools and you will definitely want to use power tools because it would take far longer without. No damages at all, which was surprising since a lot of reviews said parts were cracked, scratched, splintered, etc. For my fellow readers, each shelf holds between 16-20 books depending on the thickness of your books. Again I didn’t notice any imperfections as everything matches height and width, the shelves do not wobble, and are even. 10/10 recommend.

You definitely get what you pay for. It's all cheap material with thick "fall-a-part-icle" board. Unfortunately my delivery guy threw it on my sidewalk and right onto rock punching a hole through a side of it, but thankfully it's at the bottom and doesn't show. It's fine for it's function. If you can afford one from a furniture that'd be much better. But you are probably here like me because you can't!

Easy to put together. Shipped to Hawaii w/o any damage to shelf (even though box was a little damaged). Overall I love it. Got a good deal on it, may order another. Minus a star only b/c on carpet it leans forward but I placed 2 pieces of small thick cardboard under front legs to balance it. I rent my condo so I couldn’t use the screw in strap to secure it to the wall.

Great Bookcase- Sometimes

3 out of 5 stars
scfl89 - 4 months ago, Verified purchaser
I bought two of these bookcases in white. The first one was easy to assemble and looked great when complete. The second one was a nightmare. The company obviously does no quality control checks at all. Several of the cam holes were either too small or too large, several cam screws couldn't be fully tightened because the holes were too large, random pieces of the hardware were left out or not enough were sent, and one of the side panels wasn't wide enough; it kept popping out of the frame. I finally gave up, returned the second one, and will make do with one bookcase. I'm not going through that again.
