George Orwell (pseudonym for Eric Blair [1903-50]) was born in Bengal and educated at Eton; after service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to earn his living penning novels and essays. He was essentially a political writer who focused his attention on his own times, a man of intense feelings and intense hates. An opponent of totalitarianism, he served in the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. I remembered very little of this from reading it as a young teen, and I was surprised to find that I sort of enjoyed it. I tend to find classics pretty overrated, outdated, and not diverse enough, but I think that this one holds up pretty decently, in a world where "All Men are Created Equal" [but some are more equal than others]. It's also a pretty quick read, so if you want to dip your toes into the classics, this might be a good place to start.

This book is extremely weird but true to its synopsis! The totalitarianism described in this book is the exact definition of the type of government. This book is not what I was expecting it to be, but it was totally worth the read. It's a short book but with this copy you need to read both the preface and the introduction to understand Orwell himself and the book a bit better.
