About the Book
First published in 1985, this is a novel of such power that the reader is unable to forget its images and its forecast. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force. "A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex".--"The Washington Post Book World".Book Synopsis
#1 New York Times Bestseller An instant classic and eerily prescient cultural phenomenon, from "the patron saint of feminist dystopian fiction" (The New York Times). Now an award-winning Hulu series starring Elizabeth Moss. Look for The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, available now.In Margaret Atwood's dystopian future, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead's commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive. At once a scathing satire, an ominous warning, and a tour de force of narrative suspense, The Handmaid's Tale is a modern classic. Includes an introduction by Margaret Atwood

I read this way back before the tv series started and I just couldn’t finish it, so then I started to try again later…still nothing. I don’t get why everyone is in love with this book. The problem I found is that, I used to love Margaret Atwood, ‘The Blind Assassin’ was one of my absolute favorite books ever, now I can’t bring myself to read the rest of my MA books. I feel like it ruined those as well. We shall see…. I’m hoping that I can push through and pick one that I can actually get through so that I can continue my love for her writing. If not, then not only has THT ruined the time and money I spent on that book, but all the future wonders that I could have gotten out of MA’s books. That would just be unforgivable….

This was a really hard book to read. I experienced so many emotions while reading it. As a woman, it was terrifying. It made me ask a hard question. What would you do to stay alive?

As a fan of the show, I figured I would read the book. Be aware that if you have watched the Hulu series already this book may be a bit slow and boring to you.
