@katiegrayofficial In a move that surprised NO ONE, I snatched this off the shelf during my last Target run without a second thought. Ya'll know I'm a big fan of Brene Brown. (I have to throw YALL'S around when I talk about her work because she's got that Texas drawl). Atlas of the Heart is a word nerd's dream, and I'm a word nerd. I'm obsessed with the way language shapes us, both individually AND as a culture. Brene quotes the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in the preface: "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." I can't argue with that. I have a degree in communication. I am a coach. And I'm trained in Dare To Lead, Brene's leadership method. (What I'm saying is this book was written for me.) I draw on her work when I'm coaching clients all the time, whether I'm teaching them a tool they can use to handle cringe-worthy situations with employees or helping them overcome the invisible obstacles standing between them and their goals. Take page 142 for example. Brene talks about perfectionism, saying: Perfectionism is not striving to or working toward excellence. Healthy striving is internally driven. Perfectionism is externally driven by a simple but potentially all-consuming question: What will people think?" I've noticed that when potential clients come to consults, they say they want to hire me so they take the next steps in the business "right." Sound familiar? + As in, there's a "right" way to stop renting your chair and open a salon of your own. + There's a "right" way to hire the perfect assistant. + A "right" way to set your prices. There IS a right way, and it's the way that's right FOR YOU. Our work becomes digging through layers of what you think you're supposed to do to find your own unique way of doing it. This is the fastest way forward in your business. When you can get past #perfectionism and #overthinking, you can achieve just about anything. Food for thought: When you tell yourself that things have to be perfect before you take action, what you're really doing is trying to avoid shame, judgment, and blame. You think being perfect will protect you from those gut-wrenching feelings. It won't. Might as well do the thing anyway.

@craftymink 🤷🏻‍♀️ Why am I like this? I'm not even near through with my 6 other books that I read here and there and I pick up another 2 books while at Target!? I wonder what James Clear (Atomic Habits author - another book I haven't cracked open yet) would say to me. And I've still got Will Smith's book that I want to read too! How do people find the time to actually sit down and read!? I used to read in bed but after work, house work, life work, work outs....I'm completely worked and pass out after 4 pages. What's on your list of reads or what are you currently reading? I'll probably put it on my list. Or just buy it when I'm at Target for shampoo. 🤦🏻‍♀️

About this item

Description

Target Exclusive Bonus Content: a letter to the reader and a Q&A with the author!

In her latest book, five-time #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. Brené Brown, writes, “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and each other, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories, and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.”

In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and lays out an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.

Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as Brown’s singular skills as a researcher/storyteller, to lay out an invaluable, research-based framework that shows us that naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice.

Brown shares, “I want this to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves. Even when we have no idea where we are.”
