Description

About the Book

An interdisciplinary analysis of the impact of Brexit on citizens' rights in the UK, EU and beyond, analysing policies within the longer history of both the UK and the EU and the experiences of British, EU and third-country nationals.

Book Synopsis

The book offers interdisciplinary analyses of the impact of Brexit on the rights of EU27 citizens in the UK, Britons in the UK and the EU, and third-country nationals. It combines a historical examination of citizenship and migration between the UK, Europe and the Commonwealth with the analysis of policies and of the experiences of the different groups impacted by Brexit. The book discusses Brexit within the larger history and dynamics of UK and EU citizenship and migration. The individual chapters look at how Brexit is transforming the citizenship rights of different groups, including issues of loss of citizenship and experiences of naturalisation. They further examine the fears of the groups impacted, and larger issues of belonging, marginalisation, political orientations and mobilisations that cross legal status, nationality, ethnicity, race and class.

From the Back Cover

Drawing on expertise from sociology, law, anthropology and political science, this book analyses citizenship and migration policies to show how Brexit has transformed the rights of British, EU and third-country nationals, situating these changes within the broader historical context of British and EU migration policies. The book demonstrates that Brexit was not an isolated event but part of a broader trend of tightening citizenship rights on both sides of the Channel.

Through ethnographic and cultural studies, the book captures the lived experiences of British and EU nationals in the UK, Belgium and Spain. It discusses issues of citizenship and naturalisation, belonging, conviviality and hostility, family, risk and political mobilisation, revealing the wide-ranging consequences of Brexit. By triangulating different experiences and perspectives, the book shows how Brexit involves not only a formal loss of rights but also wider issues of social transformation, and questions of who is allowed to belong.

Ultimately, this book places the affected citizens at the heart of its analysis, shedding light on the long-term consequences of Brexit. It provides a thorough understanding of the profound ramifications Brexit holds for the future of the UK and the EU.
