I always read any book that Jodi Picoult releases, but I was very interested in this one. I'm convinced that Shakespeare didn't write his own plays and sonnets. It's not something I really ever thought about or honestly, cared about, but count me in now! Jodi's writing is always incredible, and you always feel like you are a character in her book. I loved the back and forth between Melina's and Emilia's perspectives.

Questioning Everything I Know About Shakespeare

I always assumed that people who questioned Shakespeare’s authorship were just kooky conspiracy theorists. But Jodi Picoult has convinced me! The idea that a woman was one of the group of writers whose work Shakespeare put his name on just makes sense. And I love how the book draws modern parallels about female playwrights of today that struggle to have their plays produced. The historical character, Emilia Bassano was fascinating. I love how the author brought her story to life from the pages of history. Her survivors spirit carried her through the many twists that life threw at her. And her strength and resilience made me root for her. I enjoyed the modern story, too. A bit of a romance. A bit of a comedy of errors worthy of Shakespeare himself. I mean Emilia herself! False names. Secret identities. And a woman struggling to fight against sexism while also recognizing her own privilege. And the Shakespeare buffs will appreciate all the references scattered throughout along with actual quotes. This is a solid five stars and will forever alter how I view the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays!

Emilia Bassano, a young woman in Elizabethan England, loves to write but cannot publish her plays under her own name, instead letting a man take credit so her words can be heard by the public. In modern day New York City, Emilia’s descendent Melina Green is a playwright struggling with the sexism that continues in theater to this day. She has just finished writing a play about her ancestor; would she be willing to give up the writing credit to see the play performed? I enjoyed most the sections of this book that followed Emilia’s life; the modern day chapters felt heavy-handed by comparison. Picoult did a fantastic job of showing how Emilia’s life could have led to her writing several of William Shakespeare’s plays, and I hope this book will provide more discourse over the real possibility that he did not author all of the plays credited to his name. I recommend checking this book out, especially if you enjoy theater and/or poetry. Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book.

10/10, Once again Jodi Picoult had me in a chokehold. By Any Other Name made me both laugh and cry at turns, and is an excellent piece of historical fiction set in the Elizabethan era. Anyone who has spent time immersed in literature is aware that there is a question of whether or not Shakespeare truly authored all (or even any) of his works. Picoult introduces us to Emilia, a daughter of musicians in Elizabeth I’s court, who chose to be memorialized by her words rather than in name. Her resilience and fierce strength in the face of the countless challenges of her gender, her station in life, and her religion were more than admirable. Her story hooked me from the onset, and was such a different path than any other novel that I’ve read by Jodi Picoult (and I’ve made it through 90% of her work!). I will say, By Any Other Name does drag a bit at the 60-70% mark, it’s so well worth the payout. Thank you to NetGalley, Jodi Picoult, and Ballantine Books for an ARC of By Any Other Name!

Historical fiction. Melina's passion is becoming a playwright, but she soon realizes the roadblocks for women of this world--just as her ancestor, Emilia Bassano, who lived in Shakespeare's time, experiences. Melina discovers that Emilia was the first-known woman poet published during her lifetime. Hungry for more, Melina uncovers the Shakespearean controversy--his works were not his own. In fact, she's soon convinced that Emilia wrote many plays attributed to Shakespeare. While Melina researches, she writes the play that catapults her into a parallel controversy, toppling her world and worldview. Picoult's voice throughout this novel is passionate, insightful, and thoughtful. This topic is controversial, but Picoult's research supports and strengthens the storyline/research beyond opposing assertions regarding Shakespearean authorship. I could not put this novel down--I had to keep reading. Picoult continues to push boundaries and publish intricate and complex storylines that entertain as well as cause readers to reexamine their own thinking and, in this case, remind oneself that written history is ultimately someone's perspective.

Told in dual timelines, By Any Other Name was a winner for me. I enjoy historical fiction, or possibly fact, and although I'm not a fan of dual timelines, this one worked. Emilia Bassano and Melina Green have different dress, customs, and lifestyles, but essentially are fighting the same fight women have for millennium. Their skills are not being taken seriously or their skills are co-opted by the men in their lives. Emilia must sell her plays to Shakespeare so they will be produced. Melina has her play submitted under a male pseudonym, since the person approving the play does not like women playwrights. Using the dual timeline, we can see very clearly that not much has changed! You can tell there was a huge amount of time and effort put forth doing research about Bassano. She is in the running for the playwright for Shakespeare or at least one of a few. With Ms. Picoult's recent Broadway play, she has inside information on what goes on in NYC! Jodi Picoult picks difficult and thought provoking themes for her stories. While this book tells the tale of two women four centuries removed from each other, it also lays down the truth that, in some areas, not much has changed for women at all. I think this must be the overriding topic of discussion for this work.

I have been a Jodi Picoult fan for as long as I can remember. Her books have always been transformative, all-encompassing works of art for me. That being said, I probably have not read one of her books in close to 20 years. Over the years I had moved away from literary fiction and moved on to thriller and suspense, which was great for keeping me on my toes - but I was missing the feeling I get when I am so completely transfixed by a storyline. Picking up and reading By Any Other Name gave me that feeling right back. Granted, it took me a long time to get through this book - but that was through no fault of the story. It just so happened that I chose to start it at a very chaotic time in my life and just didn't have the time to sit and read as often as I would have liked and it's a LONG story! To be 100% honest, just barely starting the book, I did not think I'd care for it. I'm not a historical fiction person and the only other historical fiction book I've pretty much ever read was The Other Boleyn Girl (which I did, in fact, LOVE). So, I may have dragged my feet just a bit at the beginning - but once I dove in, I dove in DEEP and loved every minute of it. I was completely mesmerized by the story of Emilia Bassano and everything she overcame and persevered through. What an outstanding woman of her time and any time thereafter! In short, READ THE BOOK!

Did Shakespeare really write his own plays?

I was excited to receive an ARC of By Any Other Name since Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. However, I had some reservations about the content. The book explores the idea that William Shakespeare might not have been the true author of the works attributed to him. As someone who isn’t a huge Shakespeare fan, I wasn’t sure if this was a topic I would enjoy. But, once again, Jodi Picoult did not disappoint. I wasn’t fully aware of the controversy surrounding Shakespeare, but this book really made me question what I thought I knew. The story unfolds across two timelines—one set during Shakespeare’s era and another in the present day. In the past, Emilia writes plays and poems, but because women in the late 1500s couldn’t publish their work, she needed Shakespeare’s help. He published her works under his name and shared the profits with her. In the present, Melina, a descendant of Emilia, faces similar discrimination. The way the two timelines intertwine is masterfully done. I rated the book four stars instead of five because it’s quite long and drags in places. The chapters are also longer than I prefer, and there were times when because of the chapter's length, I lost track of where we were at in the other timeline.

This phenomenal cornucopia of a book, By Any Other Name is an absolutely stunning and beautifully written by Jodi Picoult about a woman —Emilia Bassano—who could have written plays that we all assumed were written by Shakespeare. Gorgeous historical fiction with fascinating research about Emilia Bassano a real poet who was a contemporary writer during the same time period as Shakespeare. This twist forms the story of the narrative for Jodi Picoult. I am completely obsessed with this idea and I now want to re-read the plays by Shakespeare to look for the hints. For example, how did Shakespeare know so much about Italy, music and Jewish culture if he never travelled? And why did he not leave any unfinished plays when he died? And why would a writer with protofeminist characters not teach his daughters to write? I am an English major and a librarian, so this book was a delicious treat! The theory that Shakespeare’s plays could have been written by a woman and all the fabulous female characters in the plays that give insight into society’s judgments of women is a fascinating book!
