Q: so this does not require the oven??

submitted by S Hernandez - 8 years ago
  • A: Can this be used on a pottery wheel?

submitted byJen - 10 months ago
  • A: No, no it does not require and oven.

    submitted byrrkolb13 - 8 years ago
  • A: Nope! You just leave it out to dry over night and you’re good to go!

submitted byNik - 8 years ago
  • A: That is correct! Air Dry Clay should never be placed in an oven or kiln. Most pieces will be safe to handle carefully within a day, but should be allowed to dry at least 24-48 hours before painting or sealing. Actual time to completely dry may take several weeks, and the clay becomes stronger with time. Hope this helps!

Q: Does the clay crack over time? Looking for something long-lasting to capture my dogs paw print.

submitted by NP - 7 years ago
  • A: I actually just looked at a paw print I made about 6 years ago. It is still an entire piece, but there are cracks all over the top. I'm currently looking into a sealant I can use to keep it from getting any worse.

submitted byLarissa - 7 years ago
  • A: Thanks for your question! Crayola Air-Dry Clay is a natural earth clay which air-dries to a hard solid. Shrinkage should be minimal during the drying process, so using this clay for a paw-print project should work out great. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-Crayola. Best wishes for a colorful future!

Q: What paint should be used on this when dry?

submitted by Clark - 9 years ago
  • A: Awesome question, Clark! Thoroughly dry pieces may be painted with tempera, acrylic or watercolor. Hope this helps!

  • A: honestly any type of paint. i prefer acrylic paint , not crayola. but obviously it’s your preference. i just think acrylic paint works best!

Q: Is this a similar texture to playdough?

submitted by Megatron - 1 month ago
  • A: Great question! Crayola Air Dry Clay and dough modeling compounds do share some similarities, but they have distinct textures and purposes. Dough products are typically soft, squishy, and very pliable—staying moist and designed for repeated play, making it easy for small hands to mold and reshape. Crayola Air Dry Clay, is slightly firmer and denser than dough modeling materials. While it’s still soft and easy to mold, it’s intended for sculpting and dries into a hardened form once exposed to air, unlike dough products, which remains soft if stored properly. If you have any further questions regarding Crayola Air-Dry Clay, please contact us at 1-800-CRAYOLA. Hope this makes your decision as to which product will be the best fit for your sculpting easier.

Q: Is this product food safe?

submitted by Juju B - 5 months ago
  • A: Thanks for asking this colorful question! It's best to use art supplies labeled as "food grade" for anything that will touch food. Since Crayola products aren't food grade, we recommend not using them to hold unpackaged food. However, feel free to sculpt food for an awesome display!

Q: Is the clay gluten free?

submitted by Mo - 7 months ago
  • A: Thank you for asking about Crayola Air-Dry Clay. At this time, the only Crayola manufactured products that contain wheat (flour) are Crayola Dough, Glitter Dots, and Easy Peel Crayon Pencils. All other Crayola products, including Silly Putty, do not contain wheat or other grains known to be a source of gluten. Multiple Crayola products are produced in the same manufacturing facilities and on the same machinery and therefore are not considered gluten free. While there is a slight chance of cross-contamination, the machinery used to manufacture Crayola products is cleaned between production runs in a manner that meets or exceeds all regulations. This information does not apply to licensed products, such as Crayola-brand bath, personal care, or food items, which are manufactured by licensing partners. Please check the back of the packaging for manufacturer details or contact us with any questions at 1-800-CRAYOLA. Hope this helps!

Q: Can it be put in slime?

submitted by caylee - 11 months ago
  • A: Thanks for asking! We have not tested using our Air-Dry Clay in slime, so we are unsure of its results. We would suggest checking out recipes using Model Magic for an awesome butter slime, though!

submitted byCrayola - 10 months ago
    Brand expert

Q: How does this compare to model magic?

submitted by Handprint ornaments - 11 months ago
  • A: Thanks for your colorful question! Crayola Air-Dry Clay gradually hardens into a durable solid over time, gaining strength, while Crayola Model Magic is an air-drying modeling compound, Crayola Model Magic remains lightweight and retains some flexibility even after drying. Happy creating!

Q: Does the white clay dry as a true white? I want to use it for the grandkids to make snowmen.

submitted by Lnm - 11 months ago
  • A: Denny's ready to make some snowmen! The White Air-Dry Clay will dry to a more off-white color. Don't forget you can paint your completely dried masterpiece to make some fun, personalized details on your snowmen! Happy creating!

Q: Does this clay work with a kids pottery wheel?

submitted by Mom to the core - 11 months ago
  • A: Hey there! We have not tested our Air-Dry Clay to be used specifically on this type of product, so we cannot guarantee its results. We would suggest testing a small piece or contacting the manufacturer of the pottery wheel. Hope this helps!

Bought this for my 8yr old daughter to use with Make It Real Mini Pottery Studio. It is so fun and I enjoy playing together. The clay is easy to form shapes by hand or adding water to use on pottery wheel. Easy to clean as well.

Great for crafts

I purchased this clay for my students to make bowls. These are easy to mold and dried quickly. We added a little bit of water while molding/shaping it to keep it smooth and prevent it from cracking. The bowls turned out great.

Perfect for school projects

My high school project came out great, though it takes a couple days to fully dry, it was still as pristine as it was when I was still making it.

Dream come true

Love this clay! I’ve wanted to work on pottery for ages but the thought of getting clay freaked me out. This is such a great find. Easy to work with! Dries quickly and is sturdy. All my projects have come out super well and I treasure my little bucket! I’ve used paint markers and acrylic paint on them. Paint is better.

Bad quality develops over time

Quality crumbles over time and develops bumpy texture over course of several months. I spend hundreds at target every year and this is my first review, I am so mad. By the time you realize the quality is going downhill, your baby’s foot will be much bigger and you have lost the opportunity to capture their precious newborn feet.

Great for creative little minds

My 4yo loves this clay. He makes animals, cartoon characters and monsters with it. It really does motivate his little mind to be creative. The clay is easy to use, moldable, forgiving and dries to a beautiful canvas for painting. We were surprised to see that the clay was a light beige color when we first opened the tub. But soon discovered that our creations turned white when they were fully dry. What a nice indicator that they are ready to paint!

Not worth the hassle.

Did handprints with the little ones and it was not easy. First, I couldn’t get it to imprint it was too hard so we just traced and cut it into the shape of their hands. Second, it cracks way too much and took more than 2 days to dry. Third, the fingers ended up breaking off. I’m pretty annoyed at this and won’t buy it again.
1 reply from Crayola team - 11 months ago
We appreciate you sharing your experience with Crayola Air-Dry Clay. We understand how special handprint projects are and how disappointing it must have been to face these challenges. Air-Dry Clay is best worked when softened with a little water, but even then, intricate shapes like fingers can be fragile. We'll pass your feedback to our team, as we’re always looking for ways to improve our products for memorable projects like yours. If you'd like assistance with this or have further concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-CRAYOLA. -Taylor, Colorful Care Team
