Dieses Lehrbuch folgt der Unterscheidung zwischen klassischer und radikalisierter Moderne. In diesem Band zur klassischen Moderne werden soziologische Theorien behandelt, die die Herausbildung der modernen Gesellschaft zu erklären suchen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Weber, Parsons und Luhmann. Diese Positionen werden in eine Darstellung des soziologischen Denkens zur modernen Gesellschaft von Saint Simon bis Durkheim und Simmel eingebettet. Weiterhin werden wichtige thematische Ergänzungen, aber auch Debatten und Kritik an der klassischen Modernisierungstheorie verfolgt. Diese Darstellung der Theorie wird durch einen sozialhistorischen Teil ergänzt, der wichtige institutionelle Entwicklungen vor der Industrialisierung sowie den Industrialisierungsprozess behandelt.

Dieser Band wird durch einen zweiten Band zur radikalisierten Moderne ergänzt werden. Der Aspekt der Globalisierung wurde bereits in dem Lehrbuch Globalisierung. Wirtschaft - Politik - Kultur - Gesellschaft (Brock 2008) ausführlich dargestellt.
