A: Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! Our Pure-Castile Bar Soaps work very well to wash clothing by hand and in a washing machine. To handwash using this product, we recommend putting garments in 1 gallon (4L) of cold water and lather bar soap with your hands until the water is slightly soapy. Then, swish the garments gently and let them soak for 10 minutes, and swish again. Finally, rinse with clean water and gently press out excess water with a towel, and hang or lay flat to dry. However, we all have different skin, so we would advise first trying our product on a small area of your skin to be sure that it will work for you. For our customers with many sensitivities who are unable to use our scented varieties, we recommend trying our unscented soaps. These products have no essential oils and our Pure-Castile Liquid Soap contains almost double the amount of olive oil, making them milder than the rest. As mentioned above, we do not make soaps specific to certain skin conditions, although they may help in some cases. We would still recommend that you first consult these products with your dermatologist, to see which products they may recommend that are more suitable for your skin. At this time, none of our soaps or cleaning products contain these specific ingredients; therefore, we do not label them as “antibacterial.” However, the US Food and Drug Administration published a report indicating that soap and water are just as effective at mechanically removing microbes as antibacterial soap is at killing microbes. Also, keep in mind that antibacterial soap can also kill good microbes along with the bad, often containing known toxins such as triclosan. For these reasons, we believe our soap is safer and more effective than an antibacterial agent, even though it is not labeled as such.
