About the Book

"Meri Newberg is the last of her friends to remain single, so she jokingly agrees to try a ridiculous list of ways to find a spouse that was published in a 1950s magazine article. Confirmed bachelor Kai Kamaka suggests he film her attempts for a YouTube show so he can make a name for himself as a cameraman, but the more time he spends with her, the less he likes being alone. The only problem is that he's not the kind of husband material she's advertising for on billboards or trying to lasso on street corners..."--

Book Synopsis

How far would you go to find the perfect husband? All the way back to the 1950s?

In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young woman on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she's handed a strange present at the latest wedding--a 1950s magazine article of "ways to get a husband"--she decides there's nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can't get any more single, can she?

Her brother's roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love--Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When Meri Me debuts, it's an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she's looking for . . .

With droll comic timing, unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters, Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.

A sweet, feel-good rom-com

4 out of 5 stars
PhyllisE - 4 years ago
Thanks to Independent Publishers Group & NetGalley for a digital reader copy. All comments and opinions are my own. If you're looking for a sweet, feel-good rom-com, this is the book for you. Thirty-one-year-old Meri Newberg is the only one still single in her group of Christian girlfriends. As a lark, she and her brother's slacker roommate Kai decide to follow the advice of a 1950's magazine article: 101 Ways to Find a Husband. Meri will act out the items on the list, and Kai will film her and post on YouTube, on a program they dub "Meri Me." They have lots of laughs as the videos go viral, especially since the two of them are a good foil for each other. But will Meri ever find a husband? Or does Kai's goal to use the video as a demo reel to get a cameraman job backfire when he discovers he has feelings for Meri? This could have been silly, but was actually a well-written, entertaining novel with believable characters that I wanted to spend time with. Two things I especially liked about this novel were the realistic use of social media (Instagram, YouTube, cell phones) and the inclusion of the characters' Christian faith. There was no "preaching" to the reader, and their faith was a natural part of their lifestyle. I recommend this light-hearted, satisfying, and enjoyable quick read.

Looking For A Husband

I have not laughed this hard in such a long time but this book is so good I have to share my thoughts with you. What starts out as a joke quickly turns into a YouTube sensation. I loved the concept of following the list that Meri has. So what if it was written in the fifties. She does want to get married so why not follow the list and see what happens. I liked Kai and knew from the beginning he had feelings for Meri. It is obvious to everyone but Meri. They make a great team filming as Meri goes through the list which I have to say is pretty funny. You can tell the story is going to have some bumps in the road as these two find themselves spending a lot of time together. The author does a great job of mixing Biblical truths about marriage with practical tips from the famous list that Meri is trying out. Poor Kai is over his head as his feelings grow stronger for Meri. It isn’t possible that Meri is that blind that she doesn’t realize he likes her is it? There are a few moments that I wanted to tell them to stop filming and just be theirselves. The characters are well written and shows us how they each need to be happy with themselves before they can find happiness with someone else. I was surprised at the ending because I was so sure I knew what was going to happen. I loved the message of being happy even if you are not married . It is all in God’s timing and His plan for your life. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Read With Audra Blogging team. The review is my own opinion.

Finding A Husband

5 out of 5 stars

What a sense of humor this author has, and she has shared her enjoyment through her words with us. We have Meri Newberg, a 31 year old unmarried woman, whom feels that life has passed her by because she is unmarried. Enter her brother's roommate Kai, and now Meri's housemate, and now a 1950's list! The list gives 101 different ways to attract a husband, yeah, some of them we've thought of, but with Kai's help and the new youtube channel, your in for a delightful treat! Can you picture using a rope and lassoing a man? Well, now there is a video! You won't be disappointed as you page turn for the next quest in this journey, but I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations that are presented! Will Meri and Kai see what is in front of their eyes? Well we are along for the ride, or should I say tries and videos, and laughs. Enjoy Gemma and her breaking duck tape! I will definitely be looking for books by this author! I received this book through Reading With Audra, and was not required to give a positive review

Fun Contemporary Christian Romance!

4 out of 5 stars

"#6. Sit in front of him at church. You're not trying to distract him from the good Lord. You just want to show him how bountiful God's blessings can be." This is one of the suggestions in a list that Meri Newberg receives from her newly married friend, and who knew that a 1950s magazine article would have such an impact 70 years later? Certainly not Meri, but her brother's roommate Kai Kamaka views it in a different light. Why not do a YouTube program that shows Meri using these suggestions to help her find a husband? Meri Me becomes a social media success, and it seems like a great idea, until Kai realizes that he wants to be the husband that Meri finds! This is such a witty, charming book, and author Angela Ruth Strong offers a unique spin on the classic 'friends to lovers' trope. It is Christian fiction, so it's certainly a clean romance, but watching Meri and Kai's relationship develop is special indeed. I found myself often laughing out loud, but there are also touching moments as Meri and Kai deal with their individual insecurities. If you're looking for a fun contemporary romance, look no further! Husband Auditions is the book for you. I received a copy of this book from Kregel. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

So much fun!

This was such a fun book to read! It's very hip, with relatable characters. It is fairly lighthearted, yet characters dealt with real hurts and insecurities. I loved the laugh-out-loud humor. Meri takes a chance on Kai's YouTube show, and makes the reader fall in love with her fun and quirky personality. Kai knows his way around filming and editing, and puts together a series that garners thousands of followers, in pursuit of his dream job. It was their revelations about themselves, and what they really wanted in life and in relationships, that gave this book depth. The alternating POV in each short chapter kept me turning pages. I recommend this book to readers of contemporary Christian romance who want fun and depth in a well-crafted story. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Kregel, through Audra Jennings PR, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Fun, Cute, and Delightful!

Who would have thought a “List” to catch a husband, would really work. When I read through the list I about died. There are some real doozies on this list and the way Angela Ruth Strong writes them into this book is priceless! This story is so delightful, charming, quirky, and fun! It helped that the story was set in my hometown so I could picture all the places they went to. I fell in love with the characters and the whole storyline. Of course, there were a few times I wanted to scream at the characters, but overall, it was so fun, and I laughed many times. I even read a couple of parts to my husband, who then just rolled his eyes at me. I don’t know if I’d tell anyone to use this list, but who knows, some of the ways might just work. Hehe! The book had many fun humorous parts and some deep parts. There were times I cried and times I laughed out loud. I loved all the banter between Kai and Meri. I also LOVED the whole duck-tape scene with Gemma. I was rolling on the floor with that one. Angela Ruth Strong is a wonderful author and has written many fascinating books. Check out her other books. You just might start to read all her books! Now I’m just wanting to read more about Meri and Kai. I’m hoping and praying they’ll pop up in another story soon. I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

humorous, great banter

I've heard good things about Angela Ruth Strong's books, but this is the first one I've read. The premise of the book is very humorous and honestly would make a really cute movie. I enjoyed the banter between the characters and could very easily see something like this play out in real life. The characters are so relatable and while I wouldn't necessarily follow a list from a magazine in the 1950s about how to find a husband, I could easily see some women doing it. Looking forward to adding more books by Angela Ruth Strong to my to be read pile. 8. Check out his grocery cart. If you like what he buys, you might like him as a person. 65. Breathe as little as possible around him and make them shallow breaths. No man wants to see the full girth of a woman's rib cage. 99. Create suspense like Alfred Hitchcock by buying a convertible to go with your headscarf and cat-eye glasses. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own.
