This book was especially fun for me having grown up in the Hudson Valley and living the first 40 years of my life there. So to hear so many references to places such as New Paltz, Bannerman Island, Newburgh, Rhinebeck, and even Kingston, my hometown, made it that much more fun to read for me. Nothing quite like reading a story that takes place in places you know well. And it left me wondering, do people even use the term “citiots” outside of the Hudson Valley? (“city idiots” btw) I knew the reference well! This book had me guessing the entire time and I never would have imagined the outcome. Roman is a reporter in a small town Hudson Valley town and when his girlfriend and mother of his son, Ashley, turns up dead on the lawn of an old friend, he finds that he doesn’t really know what’s been going on in her life. He thought Ashley hadn’t spoken to Bella in years, so he’s not only left with figuring out how to move forward but now he wonders what else has been going on that he doesn’t know about. I very much enjoyed the audiobook and while I was briefly intimidated by so many characters being introduced early in the story, it turns out it was easy to follow and quickly sucked me in. We hear the story through multiple POVs though mainly Roman’s. Getting to hear Ashley’s side of the story from beyond the grave was a fun twist and the short chapters kept me engaged. My first book by this author but I’ll surely be back for more!
