This root cover-up spray is a convenient solution for guests looking to quickly conceal gray hair and thinning areas between salon visits. Many guests appreciate its effective coverage and easy application, making it a go-to for last-minute touch-ups. However, some have noted issues with color transfer and the product's texture, which can feel sticky or heavy. Overall, it offers a practical option for maintaining a fresh look without the need for frequent coloring.

Stains and makes hair stiff
I had high hopes for this since it had decent reviews but this stuff gets everywhere! My fingers were stained whenever I touched my hair, even after it was dry. It made my hair feel super stiff and didn’t cover the roots like I thought it would. I washed my hair 4 times before the stiffness and color came out. I didn’t want it to stain my clothes and pillow case and my fingers.

Hello Jen! We are so sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with our Magic Root Cover Up, as we always want you to have a clean, effortless touch-up between colorings. Because this quick-fix spray utilizes micro-fine pigments that bind to the hair shaft, applying too much or spraying too close can lead to a heavy, stiff feel and pigment transfer onto your hands or linens. To ensure a completely dry, transfer-resistant finish that feels natural, a great tip is to shake the can well, hold it a full four to six inches away from your roots, spray in light, quick bursts, and allow the formula to air-dry completely for two to three minutes without touching your hair.

It does cover but will leave dots on your face or clothing if you're not careful. Will also leave color on your fingers if you run your hands/fingers through your hair. Feels chalky, like between dry shampoo & hair spray feeling. Make sure you wash your hair before getting into bed if you don't want your pillow to end up with the color. That's why I only give 3 stars but I still like using it between coloring.

Changed your formula? Change it back!
I've used this stuff for years, but it's only recently that it comes off on my hands and pillows and anything that touches my hair even a DAY after applying it. It used to dry and stay put. Now my fingers are always black from just running my fingers through it to check my hair throughout the day. So frustrating.

Color was yellow
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 19 days ago
Hello Marissa! Thank you so much for reaching out about our Magic Root Cover Up - Medium Blonde, and learning that the color result appeared too yellow on your roots is very important to us. Because our temporary root spray is designed to quickly blend grey hair with blonde shades that have warm, golden undertones, it can sometimes register as overly vibrant if applied too heavily or onto a cooler ash blonde hair base. To achieve a perfectly seamless, natural-looking blend, we highly recommend shaking the can vigorously before spraying a very light, quick mist from about four to six inches away from dry roots, and then immediately running a fine-toothed comb through the area to soften the color and distribute the pigment evenly. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable feedback.

It works...kind of.
It works when you actually get product in the can. Lately they have been stingy with the amount of paint in the can, most of the time it just sprays clear liquid and no dye no matter how much you shake it or what angle you hold it at. The dye itself has an oily feel that is rather unpleasant so you have to find a balance of getting it to actually color and not making your scalp look greasy. It also comes off easily like it never really dries all the way, very often it smears on my pillow cases, even if I applied it in the morning, and I wake up looking like Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder.

The product did color, the after was horrible.
The color was all over my fingers every time I touched my scalp. My hair got wet in the rain, my face was full of color so embarrassing.

Works wonders!
I am struggling to conceal my grey strands at my hair root and this works wonders! If you’re on the fence, make the decision and just go for it! I was able to use this multiple times and it fits easily in my purse.

Hello Lily! We are so sorry to hear that our Magic Root Cover Up did not work for you and that you feel it was a waste of your money. This spray is designed as a quick, temporary fix to instantly conceal gray roots, but achieving a seamless look can sometimes depend on the application technique and how much product is used. To get the best coverage, we suggest shaking the can well and holding it a full four to six inches away from your hair, then spraying it in very light, quick puffs rather than a continuous stream. Allowing the product to dry completely for a full minute without touching or combing through it will also help the temporary color set perfectly for a natural-looking finish.

I purchased two shades and both were completely waste of money. Color is nothing like what is displayed on package nor as it is described.

Meh
While I liked the color as it matched my hair, it comes off so easily, so I’m not sure how this helps anything if it just comes right off? I try setting it with hairspray but it doesn’t really help. It gets all over my fingers if I move my hair.

Hello Morgan! We are so sorry to hear that our Magic Root Cover Up is transferring and causing a mess when you touch your hair. This formula is designed as a temporary, quick-fix spray that should dry down completely to remain smudge-free until your next shampoo, but transferring can happen if too much product is concentrated in one spot. We suggest holding the can a full four to six inches away from your roots and applying it in very light, quick-dispersed puffs rather than a continuous spray, and then letting it dry completely for at least one full minute without touching or combing through it to allow the color to set firmly.

Messy Spray-Paint
This is a horrible product, so messy, and gets on anything that touches your hair after. The "light-golden-brown" was so dark almost black. Do not buy.
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 3 months ago
Hi there! We’re sorry to hear our Root Cover Up Systems in Light Golden Brown did not meet your expectations. We understand how frustrating it is when the shade appears much darker than expected and the product feels messy or transfers after application. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us.

Good and bad
Good - covers all greys. Color matches. Bad - makes hair sticky, easily transfers, dipense pump could use improving. Hard to spray and then just blasts out.
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 3 months ago
Hi there! We’re glad to hear our Magic Root Cover Up helped cover your greys and was a good color match. We understand your frustration with the sticky feel, transfer, and spray application, especially when the pump does not dispense as evenly as expected. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us.

This works well to cover up some grays and washes out easily. When I tell people I use it they are shocked because it blends in well.
