Q: Hi- does this also paint your skin in addition to the hair? I'd like to consider this as a solution to grow out my gray without the horrible 'skunk' line, but I also don't want it to show up on my skin...

A: I would suggest using a towel or bag to protect clothing and skin below your hair line. It can "freckle" skin and clothing.
submitted byHair Problems - 5 years ago
A: Hey Ejames, we appreciate your interest in our Magic Root Cover Up. This product temporarily applies color to grays. For best results, we suggest you hold the can 4-6 inches from hair. Q: Can I have my roots colored in a salon even though there is still some residue of this spray still in my hair?
submitted by Rosco63 - 8 years ago
A: My hair stylist has noticed some build up but it has not posed issues for me for her to continue dying on it. I try to get as much residue out as I can before seeing her though.
submitted byHair Problems - 2 years ago
A: Hi Rosco63! Thank you for reaching out! Unless you have a lot of product build-up in your hair, you should be okay to visit the salon! For best results, we recommend washing out the product from your hair and waiting at least 24 hours before coloring! We hope this information is helpful!

Q: Can the spray be used to conceal thin areas for someone experiencing hair loss/thinning in some spots? Natural hair color is off black.
submitted by Stylish Lady - 8 years ago
A: I was looking at this product to use instead of my Bumble and Bumble (colored) hair powder spray because I need a different color. Otherwise, I love the Bumble and Bumble and use it for my thinning hair. I do not know if this product does what B & B does, but I was hoping it did since B & B works WONDERS for thinning hair. It miraculously makes the hair look thicker and camoflauges the thinning areas completely. I lost a lot of hair the last few months due to medication (horrible shedding) so I understand exactly what you are asking. I am going to try this product because Target is wonderful about letting you return their products if they do not work. If this doesn't work, I will stick with my B & B. Good luck!
submitted byCathee - 8 years ago
A: It might depend on how thin you are, and the color. It can and does shade the scalp.
This product is highly regarded for its effectiveness in covering gray hair and thinning spots, making it a go-to solution for guests seeking quick touch-ups between salon visits. Many appreciate its ease of use and the variety of shades available, allowing for a natural blend with their hair color. However, some guests have noted issues with transfer and application messiness, which can detract from the overall experience. Despite these concerns, it remains a popular choice for its convenience and reliable coverage.

I know this was for gray coverage, but I wanted something to get me to my next highlight appointment. I didn't see coverage at all. My dry shampoo works better to lighten my roots than this did.
Awful, no coverage and burned my scalp.

I hate it. It’s very messy.
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 20 days ago
Hi there! We are so sorry to hear that you found the Magic Root Cover Up messy to use. A helpful tip is to hold the can about 4 to 6 inches away from your dry hair and apply in short, light bursts to avoid over-spray. If you prefer a more targeted application without the spray, you might also love our Magic Root Precision Pen!

Hair product
Dislike. This product has made my hair very hard. I’ve washed it many times but the color black is still in my hair.
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 20 days ago
Hello Sofie! We are so sorry to hear that the Magic Root Cover Up - Dark Brown made your hair feel stiff and that the color proved stubborn to wash out. Temporary root sprays are formulated with concentrated pigments designed to grip the hair fiber for reliable coverage between washes, which can sometimes lead to a firmer texture if applied too closely or too heavily. A helpful tip for gently removing stubborn pigment is to massage a clarifying shampoo or a gentle cleansing oil into dry hair before washing to help lift the color more easily, while holding the can about six inches away during future applications can help keep the finish light and flexible. We truly appreciate you sharing your experience with us, and we will gladly pass your feedback along to our product development team.

If I could give this 10 stars I would - I have dark hair so the grey starts looking like a skunk stripe. This spray is so easy to use and completely covers the grey until my next appointment! The only word of caution is don’t spray if you have white or light colored clothes on as the overspray will get on shirt and counter - haven’t had any problems getting the color out of the shirt or off the counters though which is good. Great product - one of those must have products. I have really dark (almost black) hair and I use the dark brown color.

Great to have
This is my new secret weapon for pony tail days. Make sure to shake well and cover areas you don’t want covered (ears/face) it sprays well and covers fast. You need to commit to the full spray, otherwise you can get some back splatters (occasionally landed on my clothes, but doesn’t stain) The can has lasted me a long time!

Stains and makes hair stiff
I had high hopes for this since it had decent reviews but this stuff gets everywhere! My fingers were stained whenever I touched my hair, even after it was dry. It made my hair feel super stiff and didn’t cover the roots like I thought it would. I washed my hair 4 times before the stiffness and color came out. I didn’t want it to stain my clothes and pillow case and my fingers.

Hello Jen! We are so sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with our Magic Root Cover Up, as we always want you to have a clean, effortless touch-up between colorings. Because this quick-fix spray utilizes micro-fine pigments that bind to the hair shaft, applying too much or spraying too close can lead to a heavy, stiff feel and pigment transfer onto your hands or linens. To ensure a completely dry, transfer-resistant finish that feels natural, a great tip is to shake the can well, hold it a full four to six inches away from your roots, spray in light, quick bursts, and allow the formula to air-dry completely for two to three minutes without touching your hair.

It does cover but will leave dots on your face or clothing if you're not careful. Will also leave color on your fingers if you run your hands/fingers through your hair. Feels chalky, like between dry shampoo & hair spray feeling. Make sure you wash your hair before getting into bed if you don't want your pillow to end up with the color. That's why I only give 3 stars but I still like using it between coloring.

Changed your formula? Change it back!
I've used this stuff for years, but it's only recently that it comes off on my hands and pillows and anything that touches my hair even a DAY after applying it. It used to dry and stay put. Now my fingers are always black from just running my fingers through it to check my hair throughout the day. So frustrating.

Color was yellow
1 reply from L'OrealParisProductExpert team - 2 months ago
Hello Marissa! Thank you so much for reaching out about our Magic Root Cover Up - Medium Blonde, and learning that the color result appeared too yellow on your roots is very important to us. Because our temporary root spray is designed to quickly blend grey hair with blonde shades that have warm, golden undertones, it can sometimes register as overly vibrant if applied too heavily or onto a cooler ash blonde hair base. To achieve a perfectly seamless, natural-looking blend, we highly recommend shaking the can vigorously before spraying a very light, quick mist from about four to six inches away from dry roots, and then immediately running a fine-toothed comb through the area to soften the color and distribute the pigment evenly. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable feedback.

It works...kind of.
It works when you actually get product in the can. Lately they have been stingy with the amount of paint in the can, most of the time it just sprays clear liquid and no dye no matter how much you shake it or what angle you hold it at. The dye itself has an oily feel that is rather unpleasant so you have to find a balance of getting it to actually color and not making your scalp look greasy. It also comes off easily like it never really dries all the way, very often it smears on my pillow cases, even if I applied it in the morning, and I wake up looking like Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder.
