Why did you change your butter!?!

While visiting my mom in Florida she made two separate batches of cookies with two different pounds of butter from two different stores. Both were two salty to eat. I was discussing this with a friend from Wisconsin who said she recently made some cookies with the butter and had the same problem. We've always used this butter. What gives?

LOL DEFINITELY CHANGED. BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND

Thought maybe we had a weird batch of butter for Thanksgiving - totally behaving strangely when baking Been baking with LOL my whole life - I'm 56). It separates and doesn't emulsify properly. Then we bought some to freeze, I mixed Christmas cookies with it after softening, and it didn't cream up normally when mixing with sugar. I am on my second batch of homemade (not boxed) brownies because the first batch texture looked weird, they didn't spread normally in the pan, and they wouldn't come out of the pan neatly. I'm on the 2nd mixing round and realized the same thing is happening. All of the ingredients in the recipe are the same that I've always used. It's the butter. I'm buying new organic butter and won't be back to LOL until they admit something changed and they have fixed it. We are now calling it Land of Fakes Butter.

Ever since Covid your butter has been awful...

Prior to Covid all my cookies were perfect. Since 2020 or 2021 whatever you did to your butter has ruined my baking. My cookies are flat greasy garbage. I have changed absolutely nothing. I have thrown out more cookies and dough in the last three years. I will be trying something else, probably Kerrygold, I guess. Shame on you Land o Lakes for whatever you did to ruin your butter and my baking. My heart is so sad.i learned my lesson, finally making the switch after 2 or 3 crappy Christmas cookie seasons.

I have been using LOL butter in my chocolate chip cookies for tears and recently they have been flattening out. I haven't changed anything. I don't know what has changed with the butter but I wish you would go back to the original recipe.

For years I have solely used Land O Lakes butter salted. It spread well, tasted good on toast and popcorn and was perfect for my favorite cookies. Something has changed. It has very little taste on homemade bread and popcorn and my butter cookies became a solid mess in the refrigerator. Since I stocked up on L0L butter a few weeks ago, I won't be changing in the near future. However, when I've finished using what I have, I'll probably try another brand. This is sad because I've always loved this brand. I probably will put out a different stick for Christmas gatherings.

What has changed?

I just made and baked the same Christmas cookie I’ve been making for 50 years. When I creamed the butter and the sugar, it never really creams. This has never happened before. The dough was different. They didn’t get as big as they usually do. They were harder. They usually melt in your mouth. Also, when i took them out to soften, never got as soft as I needed them after two hours on counter. What is going on??

I've used Land of Lakes for years in all my baking and it always produced good results. Sadly, I am going to have to change brands because your butter has changed, and my bakery is the proof. I've worked in restaurants and have done a lot of baking, so I know what I am talking about. I wish you would return to your original recipe.

Flavor is different

I know my butter and the flavor has definitely changed. I came to reviews to see if anyone else felt the same and many people did. Our families have used this butter for generations and it is not the same.. (maybe the farmers have changed feed etc which affects flavor?) .. all these reviews can’t be coincidental. Not from long time lovers of LOL butter. It’s very bland now - not rich in flavor where it’s noticeable to other brands as before. I find myself going for another brand (Pl..) when I want a nice rich flavorful butter to stand out. What is really going on LOL??

I've used your product for decades however you have changed something in the ingredients. When I use on stove top it pops and browns almost instantly. Not cooking on high. I've never had the problem ever. Also doesn't taste the same. It is too expensive for less quality. I'd like to know what changes have been made. It has most definitely been changed.
1 reply from Consumer Affairs team - 4 months ago
We appreciate your review. We have not made any changes. Water droplets are naturally dispersed throughout the stick, and as butter is melted, droplets combine and the butter bubbles or foams. To melt butter, we recommend using medium or low heat and swirling the butter in the pan or stirring the butter to reduce the chance of spattering. Please look for an email from us.

Higher Price/Poorer Quality

I used to buy Landolakes butter exclusively. Unfortunately, there has been a downward spiral of quality and taste in this butter, while an increase in price. The butter is really greasy and does not have the rich butter taste that it used to have. When I compared it by tasting it and then tasting other brands of butter, the difference was astounding. When I read other reviews on this site, I realized many other customers had come to the same conclusion. Like them, I will no longer be purchasing Landolakes butter.

Have used Land O Lakes butter for 30+ years, raised 5 kids on it but will unfortunately be changing brands. Thought we got a bad box from the store, bought both salted and unsalted to try but the awful flavor is there. Tastes like some sort of plastic or something now.

I have been a loyal LandOLakes salted stick butter for years! I use it to make butter cookies and frosting. I use It every day to fry eggs and butter toast. But is now different. The cookie dough consistency is different. Eggs fry different. And most obvious is that the stick no longer holds its square shape at room temperature. What have you done to the ingredients???

Plastic Wrapper Ends a Century of Smart Packaging

After being wrapped in compostable wax paper for likely a century, I was greatly disappointed to see your wrapper was changed to a plastic coated alternative. Rather than going to my composter, we now have to throw it into the nonrecyclable, uncompostable plastic-filled trash can. Land-o-Lakes goes backward on sustainability and I'm more than disappointed.

We've used this butter for over 20 years, but something bad has happened to the taste. I thought it might be spoiled, but it's not that as the same bad taste is present in newly purchased sticks, sticks straight from the fridge. Unfortunately, we'll be switching brands because it's now a really awful taste.
