Q: I have heard that cast iron skillets can damage smooth top (glass) electric stoves. Is that correct?

submitted by hipjoint - 8 years ago
  • A: No this is not true. I only use cast iron skillets and my glass top stove has never been damaged by it. Just don't drop them on the stove because they are heavy! But anything heavy dropped on the glass might crack it. I LOVE my cast iron!

submitted byBarbaraSoFla - 8 years ago
  • A: Totally fine on my glass cooktop, but it's extremely important that you don't move the cast iron (like shaking the pan during frying) back and forth or drag it across the cooktop. I *have* dropped a cast iron dutch oven onto the cooktop and it shattered mercilessly! Just be VERY careful each and EVERY time you use it on a glass cooktop.

submitted bySeattleite - 7 years ago
  • A: Manufacturer of my glass top cooktop recommends against using cast iron. It easily scratches and can shatter it.

submitted byK - 3 years ago
  • A: Yes. Cast iron is not good for and can damage glass cook-tops.

    submitted byg8rz90 - 8 years ago

Q: Does it come with a lid?

submitted by Amelie - 7 years ago
  • A: No, it does not. Still a nice skillet for the money.

    submitted byJwilk002 - 7 years ago
  • A: Mine did not come with a lid.

    submitted bycmoran711 - 7 years ago
  • A: No, but you can buy it separately here on target's website.

submitted bySushant - 5 years ago

Q: Does it come with the red silicone holder?

submitted by steph - 4 years ago
  • A: No, this is normally sold as a separate item.

submitted byLodge Manufacturing - 4 years ago

  • A: Yes, the one I got did. I ordered the Lodge 12" Cast Iron Skillet, and although it is shown in the picture, it is not mentioned in the description. I thought "why would they show a picture of it with the handle if it's not included?" I saw the answer from Lodge Manufacturing saying that it is not included, and was pleasantly surprised when mine came with the silicone handle.

Q: Some reviewers are saying that these pans from Target are inferior to the ones direct from the actual manufacturer. Specifically, that these are rough and not smooth like those from Lodge website. Is this true?

submitted by Senator Dickerson - 6 years ago
  • A: I purchased a 13(.25) pan at my local store and I did notice by the outer edge by the helper handle what looks to be some grind marks, probably caused when they are removing the excess material after casing. Now I'm complaining, but I do wonder if there are pieces that Lodge makes that aren't totally perfect become seconds and sold at discounted prices. I have many other Lodge pieces and have pretty much purchased then from discount/close out stores and have never had any problems with any of them.

submitted byScotty - 5 years ago
  • A: @Senator Dickerson - Great question! The products available from Target (both in store and online) are made the exact same way as those sold directly on the Lodge website. Lodge does not offer a different quality of cookware to Target. The roughness comes from the sand molding process used to cast the cookware. Because each mold is unique, the casting formed in it will be as well. Lodge works hard to keep the casting surfaces as consistent as possible, but there may be slight variations. Seasoning build helps to create a smooth surface as the cookware is used. Thanks, Lodge Customer Care

Q: How deep is the skillet? Can I use it for deep frying?

submitted by matt - 7 years ago
  • A: No, I wouldn't use it for that purpose, it isn't very deep for actual "deep-frying". It's a skillet, so can be use for frying but not deep-frying.

submitted byfawnflowr - 7 years ago
  • A: It's only about 2 1/2 inches deep, so works for pan frying not deep frying.

    submitted bySassy1 - 7 years ago

Q: Does a bonifyed chef like a preseasoned or regular cast iron pan?

submitted by Susanne - 8 years ago
  • A: America's Test Kitchen recommends preseasoned so that is what I'm going with.

submitted byKim - 8 years ago
  • A: All cast iron cookware (that isn't enameled) needs to be seasoned before using. But whether it's preseasoned at the factory or home seasoned, it's still not totally seasoned. It takes years of use to get the smooth/slick coating on the bottom that is truly non stick. That's why it you find a pan at a garage sale/flea market grab it.

submitted byScotty - 5 years ago

Q: is the silicone handle easily removeable?

submitted by Test - 1 year ago
  • A: Yes, the silicone handle holder is easy to remove

submitted byLodge Manufacturing - 1 year ago
    Brand expert

Q: does the silicone handle come off so you can put it in the oven?

submitted by lisa - 1 year ago
  • A: We recommend removing the silicone handles when using on the stove top and in the oven. The handles are removable.

Q: how to wash cast iron pan

submitted by Chilampath15 - 2 years ago
  • A: Since the pan is new, I would wash it with hot water, clean it with a nylon bristle brush or non-scratch pad, rinse, hand-dry immediately, and rub the surface with cooking oil. Now the pan is ready to be used or stored. Since seasoning is an ongoing process, you will need to rub the cookware with cooking oil before and after each use to help build up additional seasoning layers.

I had high hopes for these pans due to the reviews, so I bought 2. Both rusted within 3 weeks and started to peal black shavings in the food. I'm not sure what this is coated with, but they are terrible.

I like the weight of cast iron. I made a pineapple upside down cake in it and it turned out perfect. Don’t like the silacone handle cover, too loose.

Traditional Iron Skillet

Exactly the traditional iron skillet I was looking for. Oiled it before the first use and will continue to do so, though it seems in to have come well seasoned. Ordered the 12 inch which seems huge compared to my 9 1/2 inch, but will be a nice complement.

Not even close to your grandma's iron skillet!

almost electrocuted - 1 year ago
Definitely not your grandma's iron skillet! The finish on this skillet is very rough, not smooth and slick. This makes cooking things like cooking eggs difficult and messy. You can't turn or flip nice and neatly without food sticking. Hard to wipe down after using because of this as well. I have my grandmother's seasoned skillet and just wipes down. I never use soap and water, which is how you keep a skillet seasoned.

Terrific pan. Lodge quality is on a par with pans costing three times as much. However, mine arrived without the silicone handle cover. Had to order it diretly from Lodge.

I bought this a week ago and used it for the first time the other night. I roased veggies and when I took it out of the oven I noticed the handle was cracked. I'm so happy it didn't break in my hands. Horrible defect, I have never had a cast iron pan crack before.
