Q: How do you recommend washing this product? Hand washing with? Can you use any type cleaning product on it or Scrub Daddy type sponge to get it clean? Then does it need to be oiled again?

submitted by Amrs - 4 years ago
  • A: This Dutch oven is pre-seasoned however the factory pre-season was very thin and light. I seasoned it three times before cooking on it. I preheated my kitchen oven to 430 degree F, swiped the Dutch oven inside and out and the lid with Canola oil ( just a light film will do), put the Dutch oven on the top rack upside down and the lid on the middle rack and baked for an hour then let them cool inside the oven for another two hours ( yes, my kitchen oven is very well insulated). Repeated for two more times (yes, it took all day but the end result was rewarding). Once the seasoning is solidly built the Dutch oven is pretty non-stick and very easy to clean. After cooking and while the Dutch oven is still very warm (but not too hot to touch) add some hot water and scrub it down with a kitchen nylon brush, and if there is any stuck on food use a hard plastic scrapper to scrap them off, dry with a kitchen or paper towel then slightly oil the Dutch oven inside and out and the lid with oil. There is no need (before or after you use it) to use high heat seasoning process every time you use it. Of course using the proper temperature to cook to prevent food sticking is more important than a good seasoning. I can fry an egg on a brand new untouched Lodge cast iron skillet non-stick, the key is temperature. I did it at 265 degree and a little butter. Don't flip or move the egg until the bottom is set. Once you get used to it cast iron cookware is not that much more maintenance than other types of cookware but cooking in cast iron have that special favor to the food that no other cookware can match.

  • A: I wash mine by hand with a little dish soap then dry right away with a dish towel

submitted byTarget Guest - 3 years ago
  • A: I heard a great interview with a cast iron company rep. He suggested that every single time you use your cast iron, you reseason it. My pans are in much better shape after following his advice: when done cooking, let the pan cool. Wash with mild dish detergent with a scrubby sponge or nonstick-cookware scrubby sponge. Rinse. Put the pan on the burner and get it SMOKING HOT. You literally want to see the smoke coming off the pan. Wipe pan with a big wad of paper towel with a little vegetable or olive oil on it the tipe of it (I use a pair of tongs to hold it), and let it get smoking hot again. Use the same paper towel and wipe it again. Turn off the heat and let it cool. You can also split the seasoning process -- do it once when you first wash the pan, and do it again right before using it. This also ensures the pan is evenly hot when you put your food in it. :D Hope this helps!

Q: what is maximum temp can use this product?

submitted by thines812 - 4 years ago
  • A: 500 degrees is the highest suggested - but can withstand up to 600

submitted byMommalookingforanswers - 4 years ago
  • A: Cast iron, not enamel, can handle 500-700.

submitted byLodge Manufacturing - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Cast iron melts at over 2000 degree F and no household stove or oven will be able to destroy it. However, because raw cast iron cookware are seasoned with oil so temperature above 500 might burn off the seasoning and the cookware will rust and food will stick to it. There is no oil seasoning on enamel cast iron cookware but the enamel coating can't withstand temperature over 500 degree F. That is why you always see the warning of max temp is 500 degree F. In actual cooking with food and liquid in the Dutch oven there is no way the Dutch oven will reach 500 degree before all the food catch on fire and burns away.

Q: My skillet is rusty on the bottom. Does one need to season with oil on the bottom also? If so, how long?

submitted by Barbie B - 7 months ago
  • A: You need to season the entire skillet including the bottom, outside, and handles. We recommend cleaning the pan after cooking, rinse with warm water, hand-dry, and promptly rubbing the entire skillet with cooking oil.

Q: I need a Dutch Oven to bake bread, and the recipes all say to preheat the oven and Dutch oven for about 45 min before putting bread in and baking it, so is it safe to preheat an empty dutch oven?

submitted by bob - 1 year ago
  • A: You can pre-heat the regular and color enamel Dutch oven in the oven empty before adding the dough

Q: I just opened my new Dutch oven and it's black but there is a spot on rim/Hanley where the paint is off. Is this normal?

submitted by ksunstrom678 - 2 years ago
  • A: Yes, it is normal. The coating is a functional application and not a cosmetic application. It is baked on cooking oil. It is normal to have areas where the seasoning has bubbled and flaked off or not seasoned as well as other areas; underneath, the seasoning can be a lighter-colored spot. No need to worry - it is not rust. Whenever you see a seasoned spot that is dark brown, it means it's the first stage of seasoning. It will darken up over time with proper use and care.

Misleading handle design on Lodge

1 out of 5 stars
The cover of this cast iron dutch oven is not one solid piece with handle that seems to be made of steel instead of cast iron. It's annoying that the knob might not be cast iron eithr. Other pots and pans have cast iron handles, so why not this one?

This Dutch oven is so great. I use it to make soups and chili but my favorite to make with it is sourdough bread. It is important to lightly oil the pot and lid after each use but that goes for all cast iron pots and pans. I totally recommend it.

This is my first cast iron pot and I wanted to give it a try for oven roasting of beef brisket. Came pre-seasoned and oven-ready; has a tight fitting lid that kept the liquid from evaporating. All in all a great addition to my kitchen.

Not properly seasoned from the factory

This cast iron dutch oven doesn't seem safe to cook in! Everytime you wipe it with a paper towels a lot of black little flakes are rubbing off. Imagine eating all that stuff? Not sure if this is seasoned or if it's was painted. I looks to be painted because of all the chips flakings off near the edges. Lodges Cast Iron Casserole I got from amazon was in fact properly seasoned and food does not stick to that. There are also no black littles flakes peices rubbing off. Compared to that cast iron casserole, this dutch oven is horrible. Food sticks to it is hard to clean.

I'm not new to cast iron cookware all together, but this is my first piece that's not a skillet. I admittedly didn't get mine at Target, but it's 100% the same thing, even same price. Place I got mine from doesn't have a review page and I'm reviewing a few other things from Target so I'll chime in on this too. Really the one and only bad thing about any cast iron cookware is to be expected, and that's that they weigh a ton. Seriously, while you can use them on a campfire no problem, hauling it out there could be a knock against them if you're hiking or biking your way to your campsite. That really is the only thing bad to say and again, it should be expected. Basic universal tip for all cast iron cookware, even if it comes preseasoned, still rinse it out, dry it and season it yourself. You'll never get a total nonstick piece of cast iron cookware, but the more you season it, the less stuff sticks. There's really not a lot to say about this specific piece because most of what is good about is it is universal to all cast iron cookware. Heck I even had a cast iron skillet from Dollar General that was pretty alright, until I switched to Lodge for American made products. So yes, this is great, but so that's just saying that cast iron cookware is great. This specific piece is merely great more because it's cast iron, not because of brand or other things. Although a nod to the design here. The handles on both the pot and lid are useful and while they still get way hot, naturally, this design at least makes accommodating that easy enough. Crazy easy to recommend both this and any and Lodge cast iron cookware.

The lid needs to be re-seasoned

The pot works great but the lid rusts very easily. I'm not new to cast iron. The lid just seems prone to rusting. The nubs make it difficult to scrub off the rust with steel wool but once I got it cleaned up and re-seasoned it seems to have helped.

I've made beef stew and roasted a chicken in it since I received it a few weeks ago. They both came out delicious. The stew meat was so tender and the chicken turned out moist and tender. I'm so glad I bought it. This will last a lifetime. It will be passed down to my kids for sure. I love the Lodge brand.
