Captivating African historical fantasy
Masquerade is an African-inspired fantasy novel, a loose retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth. Òdòdó is young blacksmith in the city of Timbuktu, which has just been conquered by the warrior king of Yorùbáland. The blacksmiths are all women, accused of being witches, and treated as social pariahs. When Òdòdó is abducted by the king to be his second wife, she is elevated to a world of luxury, power struggles and secrets. Masquerade is well written, with lush, detailed world building and lyrical prose. There is enough description to make the reader feel immersed in this reimagined 15th century West Africa, but not so much that the story is bogged down. Òdòdó is a strong, determined, morally grey character who learns to adapt to her situation, to scheme, and come into her own power. The secondary characters were well developed and interesting. Masquerade is a compelling, captivating tale that was impossible to put down.

Refreshing Protagonist
This 15th century Nigerian loose retelling of the Greek Persephone mythology was a breath of fresh air to the historical fiction genre. O.O. Sangoyomi’s descriptions, especially of the food and clothing, were truly enchanting. The protagonist Òdòdó had exceptional depth to her character adding realistic elements that are often missing in “the chosen one” tropes. She was completely unpredictable in a refreshing way. Relationships between characters were beautifully built and at times left the reader in utter heartbreak. The plot has a leisurely pace but the characters kept me drawn into the story. This is one of those books that leaves the reader staring at the wall after finishing it. I did not expect the ending at all but absolutely loved it. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a Nigerian historical fiction or anyone looking for a strong morally gray female protagonist.
