Q: What is the max child weight capacity of the Maxi-Cosi Calao? The mattress seems to sit at ground level, so I am surprised the listed "Holds up to" is only 20 lbs - not great for the category.
submitted by Nate Tro - 4 days ago
A: Great question! Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention, as the information on the site is not correct and we will be reaching out to fix that. As per the instructions for our Maxi-Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard, you should discontinue use with the bassinet portion when the child reaches 15lbs. For play yard mode, you would discontinue use when the child is able to climb out or reaches the height of 35 in, whichever comes first.

Absolutely Love It
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Maxi-Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard through the Stellar Product Testing Panel, and I’m so impressed! As a mom of five, I’ve owned several play yards, and this is by far the most user-friendly one. It’s incredibly easy to set up and take down, and the mattress is nice and cushy for my baby. I love the convenient backpack-style travel bag, it’s perfect for trips to Grandma’s or the park. The size is just right, and I’m excited for my baby to use the little door when she’s older. Highly recommend!

Great compact pack and play
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First impression of this play yard was it's amazing compact nature! The carrying case comes with a handle and backpack straps which I know will be very helpful when traveling with a baby and all of the necessary things. One thing I especially loved about this product was the fact that the play yard and bassinet attachment all fit into the one carrying case! In other pack and play's I've had, you have to buy the bassinet attachment separately, which also means two carrying cases. When traveling, having two different products in tow for a pack and play is very cumbersome, and I'll definitely be using this one instead because of that option! It was VERY easy to set up and take back down, and everything fit into the carrying case easily. I would say it is much smaller than my current pack and play, so my toddler felt big for it. But, the best part is that the mattress sits on the ground, rather than raised up on legs, so my toddler could still use this and won't max out on the weight for awhile!! The mattress for the bassinet unzips to become smaller, and that piece is zipped back on when you want to use it as the pack and play/play yard. It has a zippered side opening, which is great for transferring a sleeping baby. My only downside was the fact that the zippered piece of the mattress creates a small crease in the mattress when being used for the play yard. I could just imagine that'd be uncomfortable for baby, but it's easy enough to put their head on the other side. I also don't have sheets for it yet, but I assume that would make it less noticeable. Also, there are velcro pieces that keep the mattress in place in both the bassinet and play yard modes. There was also a pocket on the bottom of the mattress to keep the instructions book - something so small but so helpful when you're on the go and won't remember to pack all of the instruction manuals for every item you bring! Thank you Stellar Product Testing Panel for the opportunity to try out this play yard in exchange for my review!

Aesthetic and functional play yard
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Maxi Cosi Calao Playard is one of those baby items that actually looks good in your home and works the way it should. It’s a lightweight 3-in-1 setup that functions as a bassinet for newborns, a travel crib for infants, and later a playard for toddlers. I was surprised by how sturdy it feels for how light it is and how easy it is to move from room to room. I use it mostly in the living room but also have moved it to the bedroom a few times when needed. The setup takes just a few minutes the first time and even faster once you get the hang of it and you can wear it as a backpack during travel which is super convenient (see photo)! The design is what really stands out. It has clean lines, neutral fabric, and just looks great! The mesh sides let plenty of air in, and you can see your baby from every angle. There’s also a zip-open side panel that is helpful for a crawling baby so that they can enter and exit on their own (if you want them to). The zippers all come with a small clip that you can attach to secure it so that it doesn't open up on its own (or with the help of a toddler). The mattress is firm and is easy to convert when transitioning from bassinet to playard. I really couldn't find any downsides but if I had to pick one, it would be that the mattress isn't waterproof; but this is an easy fix with a layer of protection. Overall, the Calao is a great pick for anyone who care about design, practicality, and convenience. It looks beautiful, feels well made, and grows with your baby from newborn to toddler. It’s definitely more of a premium item but in my opinion, the comfort, style, and quality are worth it. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this children's item.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Maxi-Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard for free to review, and I’m so impressed! My baby slept great in it from the first night — the mattress is comfy, and the design feels safe and sturdy. It’s also incredibly easy to set up, fold down, and pack away, which makes traveling with it a breeze. The sleek look and compact size make it perfect for both at-home naps and trips. Definitely a must-have for parents on the go!

The holy grail of play yards
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was extremely impressed by this play yard! Pack ’n plays and travel bassinets can be so bulky and frustrating to deal with, but Maxi-Cosi truly nailed it here. The Calao is incredibly easy to set up, take down, and pack away — it’s efficient and parent-friendly in every way. You can tell this was designed by people who get it! 3 Modes of Use: The three modes are such a game changer for growing stages from baby to toddler. Our toddler absolutely loved it — especially being able to crawl in and out through the mini zipper window! It’s not just a nap spot; it’s a fun little play space that grows right along with your child. Design & Portability: This is hands down one of the chicest play yards out there. I love how modern and sleek it looks — no loud prints or bulky frames, just clean, stylish design. And can we talk about the carry bag? Genius! It actually fits easily (no wrestling it in!) and the lightweight build makes it a dream to travel with. Whether I wear it like a backpack or grab it by the handle, it’s so convenient to take anywhere. Where We Used It: We’ve used it everywhere — at the ballfields (we practically live there with four boys!), at friends’ houses, and even on a quick weekend getaway. It’s been a total lifesaver every time. What I Loved Most: The convenience of this design is unmatched. After struggling with bulky pack ’n plays for years, I honestly wish this existed when my older boys were babies. Even my parents were shocked watching how easily it pops up and folds back down — no complicated steps or pinched fingers. Maxi-Cosi clearly had busy parents in mind, and it shows. Being able to have it ready in seconds makes life so much easier when you’re always on the go. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this children's item to review. It truly is a game changer!!

Aesthetically pleasing and versatile play yard
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this play yard. I have been using it for a few weeks now and have been quite impressed with it. It fits in so nicely with my decor that I have just kept it out in the living room as a perfectly convenient contained play space for my 6 month old while I am doing other chores. She loves to lay down, roll around, and sit in it to play with her toys. The safety zipper is a great feature! I received the product in the Oat color and it is so aesthetically pleasing, especially compared to other baby items. The legs are a lovely light wood color. The play yard feels very luxurious and well-made. The mattress is nice and cushy (I laid on it myself to confirm) but has a weird bump in it for some reason. It was so easy to put together - no tools required! It isn’t huge, but I think that is one of the pros because it doesn’t take up too much space in a room and it’s portable so I’m looking forward to bringing it to the park or other outdoor events. I appreciate that there are 3 modes for this play yard so I can use it with my next baby too from birth (my 6 month old is too heavy for the bassinet feature now). I do wish that the carrying bag was more padded so it was protected when taking it during travel. I would probably carry it on to be safe versus checking it with luggage. Overall, this is a great choice for a high-end, sturdy, versatile play yard.

Compact Convenient Perfect for Travel
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We’ve been using the Maxi-Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard for a few weeks, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite baby gear items. The 3 modes are so convenient — it functions as a cozy newborn bassinet, a mid-level infant sleep space, and then a full-size play yard for when your baby becomes more active. I especially love the bassinet feature, which is something missing from a very similar-looking competitor. It’s perfect for keeping baby nearby during naps and transitions smoothly as your little one grows. The design is sleek and modern, and I love how compact and lightweight it is. It folds down easily and takes up very little space, which makes it ideal for travel or moving from room to room. We’ve used it both at home and for overnight trips, and setup/takedown couldn’t be easier. One small critique: the Calao is a bit shorter and more compact, so it might not last as long into toddlerhood if you have a curious escape artist on your hands. But for infants and younger toddlers, it’s a fantastic option — sturdy, stylish, and thoughtfully designed. Overall, I’d definitely recommend the Calao to parents looking for a travel-friendly, all-in-one play yard that combines functionality with great aesthetics. Thank you to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this children's item.

Perfect staple piece that transitions with baby
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thank you to Stellar Product Testing Panel for giving me the opportunity to try out this play yard! I have absolutely loved every aspect of it. First, the travel case with backpack-style straps makes carrying it in and out of the car—or to the in-laws’ house—a breeze! Setup takes less than five minutes and is completely foolproof. It’s truly self-explanatory and so easy to assemble. The neutral design blends beautifully with any home décor, so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. You can easily leave it assembled for daily use without disrupting your space. The bassinet feature is wonderful! The quilted, padded top is so comfortable for baby and super easy to spot-clean when needed. The play yard itself is perfect for safe, supervised playtime—it gives baby plenty of room to move while staying secure inside the mesh enclosure. I also love the thoughtful safety zippers that ensure everything stays securely closed. This play yard has quickly become my new favorite baby essential for both sleep and play!

Sooo versatile and practical
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] To begin this review, I have had a lot of experience with using other play yards for our first baby. With our 2nd baby, this Maxi Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard is a game changer when it comes with portability. It is light weight and folds up smaller than a typical play yard, and it is very easy to carry as the carrying case turns into a backpack. These three things makes this play yard an essential item to bring with you on trips or just to different rooms within your house where you need to put your baby or toddler down for a nap or if you need to step away briefly knowing they are safe. The added zipper entrance is also so convenient for transferring sleepy baby when the normal way of lowering them down isn't working. Setting up the play yard is very simple and Maxi Cosi made these play yards with simplicity in mind for us sleep deprived parents. The play yard also comes with a bassinet top with a 15 lb weight limit, so perfect for the newborn period. The included pad for baby/toddler is wonderful which other play yards do not come with one. Such a step up in quality and comfort and safety for little ones. When this is folded up and in its case, it takes up a small footprint where you do not need to do too much tetris when loading the car up for a road trip. I love how lightweight this is as it makes it so much easier to bring with you to another room or with you on a trip to grandma's. There is an added plus that the fabric is mesh and durable so that you can have 360 visibility and know that its fully breathable. Always an added piece of mind. Pros: Lightweight Easy to assemble Compact Includes firm, safe, comfortable sleeping pad Super cute compared to other play yards we've had- it blends well with our home, and not add to the visual clutter Cons: Durability - it is sturdy, but time will tell when my little one starts standing and if the mesh will hold up with all that scratching and pushing and pulling. Price- this is not a cheap travel play yard, however, I do think with its portability and light weight you wouldn't need another play yard if you need several for family visits. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this great play yard!

Perfect for families on the go
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thank you to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this play yard to review! All opinions are my own. As a mom of 3 who is constantly on the go, I LOVED this play yard. It’s extremely lightweight and the backpack style storage bag makes it easy for me to grab and take anywhere. Setup is quick and takes less than 2 minutes, which means everything when trying to juggle multiple children. When using this as a play yard, the part of setup which takes the longest is pulling the velcro straps of the mattress pad through the holes of the bottom to secure it in place. While I love the added security this provides, it is a little annoying to have to unzip the play yard and reach in to do so. Putting it away is just as quick and easy. While testing this product I brought it to and from friends houses and soccer practices. While some baby items can make outings more stressful, this play yard helped alleviate some of the stress of our busy lifestyle! I love the 3 different modes. The bassinet attachment is also simple to install and makes it easy to lay a young baby down for a nap without having to strain your back. My daughter just hit 16lbs so she is unfortunately unable to continue to safely use that attachment since it maxes out at 15lbs. She now naps and plays in the larger portion of the play yard. The is currently 26 inches long and still has plenty of room to move and roll around. At home, we love to unzip one side so that she can scoot herself in and out! For some reason she is MESMERIZED by the mesh fabric on this play yard and when I unzip the door she will lay there for 10+ minutes holding the fabric in her hands and examining it. Looks-wise, this play yard is GORGEOUS. The details make it feel very luxurious and high end for a baby product. I received this product in Classic Oat which is a beautiful light, neutral beige. The material at the top is very cushiony and has faint beige pinstripes. The legs look like a light blonde oak wood. It perfectly fits with the decor of my home which is a nice change from the bright bold colors of most baby products. Overall, my favorite features of this play yard are the quick set-up and the lightweight portability of it! My previous play yard just sits on a shelf in my garage because I don’t even want to deal with setting it up. With this one, I can do it in a pinch while holding my baby in my other arm! I would definitely recommend this product for families on the go and anyone who loves luxurious details in baby products!

My Honest Review of the Maxi Cosi Calao
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this Maxi Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard as part of Stellar Product Testing Panel. First off, this playard just looks and feels super nice. The materials are premium, and it doesn’t scream “baby gear” in your living room. The design is really smart too—those support legs fold in, so you can actually move it through doors and hallways without having to take the whole thing apart. That’s a huge win for me. Switching between bassinet and playard mode is also super quick and easy. It’s just a matter of a few simple steps, and you’re good to go—no wrestling with complicated parts or instructions. Another thing I love: the cushion sits right on the floor, not hanging from a frame. It feels more stable and comfy for my little one. Plus, it’s really lightweight and easy to travel with, which is a must for us. The zippers even have a safety buckle, so there’s no way for a curious baby to escape. Honestly, it feels like a solid travel crib with its own unique touches. It’s definitely on the smaller side, so if you want a ton of space, this might not be it. Because it’s so light, it’s also not quite as sturdy as some bigger playards. And the support leg flares out more than I expected, so it actually takes up a bit more floor space than you’d think. If you’re looking for something lightweight, thoughtfully designed, and easy to move around, I’d definitely recommend checking out the Maxi-Cosi Calao. It’s super travel-friendly, looks great, and switching between modes is a breeze!

Mattress for the win
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the most beautiful play yard! It seriously has the best aesthetic, I love keeping it out in our home! I own another play yard with a similar design. The benefit of the Maxi Cosi Calao is the mattress. Play yard mattresses are often very thin and hard, my baby never sleeps as well because of this on trips. The Maxi Cosi mattress is sooooo much more comfortable without compromising safety. I even got in myself to test, and the difference is clear! We will be taking this for travel going forward. The mattress cover unzips for cleaning, and fits a standard play yard sheet. I do wish Maxi Cosi sold sheets to go with as an add on. It packs down quickly and easily into a backpack, which fits in a suitcase for airline travel. It is a lovely place for my son to play as he has just started sitting. I know he is safe from tumbles on the soft surface! My toddler also loves playing in it with his brother. Since the mattress sits on the floor, it has great longevity of use! The buckle on the zipper is very handy for when we want to block the toddler from opening and closing the zipper! My one complaint is the fabric came picked in one spot out of the box. Rubbing my hand over it I didn't find it particularly easy to pick, but the mesh is a bit on the thinner side. I do find this makes it so that it doesn't heavily obscure my baby's view while he is playing. Overall a great product with several key benefits in the category, but the mesh did come picked. Thanks the Stellar Panel for allowing me to test this product.

Great for travel and beautiful
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been so happy with the Maxi Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard. It’s unbelievably lightweight and sets up in just a minute, which makes it perfect for taking to hotels, grandparents’ houses, or anywhere we go. The backpack-style travel bag is such a smart feature and makes it super easy to carry. I love the clean, modern design, and the fact that the bottom sits right on the floor means there’s no weight limit, only a height limit. The side zip is a game changer for transferring a sleeping baby or toddler without waking them. It is on the shorter side, so there’s definitely some bending involved, and the bassinet has a lower weight limit (15 lbs), so we’ll outgrow that part soon. But honestly, the convenience and portability make it totally worth it. I’ll be bringing this everywhere over the holidays so my little one can nap in comfort wherever we are. Thanks to Stellar Testing Panel for providing this product for review!

Maxi Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard Review
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recieved this product through the Stellar Product Testing Panel. My first impression on this play yard was how compact and light it was. This really sets it apart from other play yards that are much bulkier and heavy. I am attaching a picture of what it looks like carrying on my back. The play yard was super easy to unfold and pack back up. I really appreciated how it had a bassinet attachment. I am attaching photos of what my almost 4 month old ~11 lb baby looks in both modes. I took the play yard to a friend's house during a party and my baby was able to take a nap. I think this play yard is perfect for traveling, especially on a plane or when you need to pack light. We plan on taking it to Aruba next year. If you are looking for something compact and travel friendly, this is definitely a great product. The only critique I have so far is that the bottom mattress does sit on the floor, which makes it a little more on the firmer side. Overall I think this is a great product and would recommend to anyone who likes to travel for a compact sleeping and playing area.

Beautiful and efficient
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was very impressed with this play yard. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous, it truly is portable. I love, love, love that the carry bag is a backpack style. It makes it so much easier to tote around. I was disappointed that my son is too heavy for the infant mode, but that's no fault of the company. 15 lbs and/or pushing up on hands and knees is generous, my baby is just a chonk! The most beautiful play yard I have seen
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The look of this play yard had me genuinely impressed, the color, the fabric, the overall design is so beautiful and you can tell how well it’s made. We used it in our bedroom and I appreciated the fact that it was actually nice to look at and went well with our bedroom! If we’re going to have the baby stuff take over our house, we can at least have it be beautiful! My only complaint was the fabric of the cover was really thin and seems like it would tear easily if it got snagged on something and after putting it in my car, the light colored fabric already has some small stains on it but I do love that it folds up into a backpack. The backpack design is actually a game changer when unloading the car after our roadtrip. It made it so much easier to care, all play yards should come this way in my opinion! The infant bassinet mode is the perfect size for the short time you’ll need it during those newborn days. The mattress definitely feels like it’s higher quality. The toddler sleep mode works great, I found it a lot smaller than other play yards I’ve used which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I didn’t particularly like the convertible infant to toddler zip on/off mattress, I thought it left a weird gap in the mattress while it was in toddler mode. And finally, the play mode is great especially having the zipper on the side to open and close it for your baby to crawl in and out of. Like I said, it’s just a little smaller than ones we’ve previously used. Folding it down was super quick & easy but still felt like it was more steps to set up and take down than others out there. Overall, if I was judging it on design alone it would be a perfect 5 stars but because of the set up/folding steps, the mattress not being my favorite, and the travel bag fabric I’m giving 4 stars. Thank you to stellar product testing panel for providing me with this product in exchange for this review!

5Mattress pad sealed the deal
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this item to try through the Stellar Product Testing Panel. We just had our 4th child and have gone through many different kinds of bassinet/play yard items. I was thoroughly impressed with all of the intentional upgrades this play yard had to offer! The compact design is light. It is not bulky or hard to fit in the back of my car. Unlike other play yards, I can carry it on my back and not feel like I'm lugging a giant bundle of firewood wherever I go. There are no loose pieces! After the initial setup, I was able to break it down (the legs fold up on a hinge) and fold it up in 5 seconds. Perhaps my favorite part of this item is the mattress pad! The bassinet/play yard mattress pad is so soft and thick! It's not that uncomfortable cardboard so many other play yards utilize. I don't feel bad about letting my baby sleep or hang out in it because of how comfortable the mattress feels! I haven't used the play yard yet, but I appreciate the zipper option on the side. My older kids will be able to let my baby out with the zipper rather than try to pick up and carry the baby out. The aesthetic has already received many compliments from friends and family who have seen it. It made with quality materials and thoughtfully designed with both parent and baby in mind! Overall, I am very impressed with this play yard and will be bringing it with me whenever I travel.

Wonderful and Compact Travel Play Yard
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this children's item. This is honestly one of the most compact and useful play yards I have used. As a mom of 3, we travel quite a bit internationally and have used many different play yards at home or when traveling. The Maxi Cosi Calao Play Yard is light and the backpack makes it so easy to transport or travel with. Setting it up is very self explanatory and intuitive which is helpful. I did not need the instructions or videos to figure out how to put it together. What impressed me the most that separates this play yard for me is that it has a very thick but firm pad. You will not need to worry about comfort when using this for sleep. In the mode where you use as a bassinet, it is a very good size - just in between our bassinet and crib. Our 4.5 month old has outgrown our bassinet so we are currently using this play yard beside our bed before eventually moving him to a crib. He has been sleeping well in it. It is aesthetically pleasing and fits so well in our bedroom with a bit of a minimalist feel. When he’s older, we will probably move this to our living room so that the baby can have a safe spot to be in when I need to keep him apart from his active big brothers. The play yard has a good amount of space, especially when he learns to sit up. This will also now replace our old play yard as the travel pack and play due to the backpack and light weight. If you ever need to bring this to grandma or grandpa’s it will be easy for them to figure out as well. I am so impressed with this play yard and wish I had this with my older kids!

Great for any trip
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using this Maxi Cosi Calao Travel Play Yard at home and for one hotel stay now and I can confidently say it's my favorite play yard we have ever owned! Usually these come with the frustration of knowing you're eventually going to have to pack it up but this is so easy to install and put back in the storage case it makes taking it with you on a vacation a breeze. We really loved the high-quality fold out legs and it's an added bonus that it's beautiful and a nice neutral color. I really like that the side has a zip down option because when my baby isn't using it my toddler actually enjoys going in and out of there as well. We were able to use the bassinet portion which was nice and easy to zip in. I really like the mattress that it comes with and my baby seemed to think it was pretty comfortable because he slept in it no problem! We used this in one hotel room so far and we were able to fold it up each day to make for more room in the hotel room! Usually we don't get to do that because play yards are so hard to take down but would highly recommend this for someone who travels a lot or just needs an extra little spot in your home for a baby to sleep.
