Book Synopsis

Now available in trade paper with an eye-catching new cover! For everyone who has fallen through the wardrobe door, experienced the magic of Narnia, and longs to know more, New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan delivers a heartfelt story that is simultaneously a fascinating look into the bond between siblings, a peek behind the curtain of Lewis's personal life, and an homage to the life-changing magic of stories.

1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a seventeen-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it's just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: "Where did Narnia come from?"

Despite her fear about approaching the famous author, who is a professor at her school, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with C. S. Lewis and his own brother Warnie, begging them for answers.

Rather than directly telling her where Narnia came from, Lewis encourages Megs to form her own conclusion as he shares the little-known stories from his own life that led to his inspiration. As she takes these stories home to George, the little boy travels farther in his imagination than he ever could in real life.

After holding so tightly to logic and reason, her brother's request leads Megs to absorb a more profound truth: "The way stories change us can't be explained. It can only be felt. Like love."

Once Upon a Wardrobe is a captivating historical novel that deftly combines fact and fiction. It's an emotional journey into the books and stories that make us who we are. It's perfect for book clubs, for anyone who has ever longed to know more about Narnia, and for anyone whose life has ever been impacted by a story.

What an Enchanting Tribute to Narnia!

5 out of 5 stars

"Where did this land of the lion, a white witch, and fauns and beavers and castles come from?" In other words, "Where did Narnia come from?". Posed from the lips of a young man with a weak heart, Megs Devonshire places herself in the periphery of the one person who can answer her younger brother's question . . . . . Clive Staples Lewis. After all, he wrote "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe". He must know, he just has to know, but will he tell her? With a creative energy and a philosophical synergy, "Once Upon a Wardrobe" delves deep below the surface of one's imagination into that place where the magic resides. Employing a main character whose mind is soaked in logic, the author manages to pierce the outer membrane of arguably one of the most brilliant thinkers in recent history, who also happened to pen one of the most beloved fantasy series of all time. Weaving in the details of C. S. Lewis' life, the novel skillfully uses the seasoned professor's conversations with Megs to gently guide her, and thus the reader, through the process of realizing that sometimes what is the most real is actually carefully tucked between the layers of the imagination, inferring that "Sometimes fairy tales may say best what needs to be said." Fans of Narnia! Be prepared to be enchanted all over again, for "I think the lion follows all of us around. We just have to look for him. " I couldn't agree more!

My favorite book of 2021 so far

I wish I were sitting across from you, each of us with a cup of our favorite hot beverage, sharing my thoughts on Once Upon a Wardrobe. I want to read your expressions, and for you to read mine, to make certain that I am clearly communicating the magic and depth of this story. I am used to understanding books, but not to books understanding me. We have all read books that we have enjoyed, books that have entertained or informed us; then there are those special books that strike a chord within us, that resonate in our hearts. Once Upon a Wardrobe will not only be one of those books for many, it will also be a window into the magic of those books, the ones that fill your heart, that transport you to another time and place, that transform some inner part of you. I realize that I have left a bit of myself within the pages of this book, and have kept a bit of Megs and George within me, and this makes me quite grateful to Patti Callahan for crafting such an extraordinary story. I am grateful as well to Harper Muse for providing me with a complimentary copy of Once Upon a Wardrobe via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

A Magical and Heartfelt Read

5 out of 5 stars

Patti Callahan writes this magical and heartfelt book exploring the question: Where did Narnia come from? This book draws you in from the first page and is hard to put down until the very last page! It’s1950’s, Meg is attending Somerville college. She has a brother George who is bed bound because he has a life threatening heart condition that no one can do anything about. George becomes fascinated with the book The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S Lewis after his Aunt gifts it to him. Meg comes home on the weekends in order to spend time with George and is convinced by George to read him this book. George knows that C.S.Lewis is a professor at Meg’s college, so he wants Meg to ask the question is Narnia real and how did it begin? Meg knows even though she doesn’t have the courage, she doesn’t want to disappoint George. Will Meg to get the answers George is looking for? It clearly shows what a sister will do for her brother out of love and what lengths she is willing to go to fulfill his last wish. A heartfelt book that will not disappoint. Be sure to add this book to your TBR list for the fall.
