Description

About the Book

A comprehensive guide to phage therapy, exploring its biology, clinical applications, and innovative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance in modern medicine.

Book Synopsis

As antibiotic resistance escalates, phage therapy is re-emerging as a precise and adaptable alternative to conventional treatments. This book presents a comprehensive exploration of bacteriophages--viruses that infect and destroy bacteria--and their therapeutic potential in modern medicine.

It covers key aspects of phage biology, design, and delivery, including advanced strategies that combine phages with antibiotics, immunotherapy, and photodynamic approaches. The text also addresses production standards, safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks essential for clinical translation.

Drawing on global case studies and recent clinical trials, the book illustrates both the promise and complexity of deploying phage therapy against resistant infections. Future-facing chapters explore personalized phage medicine, AI-driven phage selection, and integration into broader antimicrobial strategies.

Written for researchers, clinicians, and graduate students in microbiology, pharmacology, and biomedical sciences, this volume bridges foundational science with translational insight. It is a timely and authoritative resource for those advancing targeted solutions in the fight against superbugs.

About the Author

Professor Chuanbin Mao is a Global STEM Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Director of the Jockey Club STEM Lab for Nature-Inspired Precision Medical Engineering. An elected fellow of numerous prestigious societies--including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM), the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE)--he is a leading expert in applying phage biology to modern medicine. His seminal contributions involve using phages to develop novel biomaterials. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals such as Chemical Reviews, Science, Nature Materials, and Nature Nanotechnology. His groundbreaking work focuses on genetically engineering phages for use as biomaterials in biosensing, nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, and antimicrobial therapy. He is a recipient of the US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, among other awards.
