Do you need a PS5 to play with the Portal? Yes, and also no. The PlayStation Portal's primary function is to act as a remote player for your PS5 console. This means it streams games directly from your PS5 over Wi-Fi, allowing you to play anywhere in your home or over a broadband internet connection. For this original intended use, a PS5 console is required. However, Sony has recently introduced a new feature. With a system software update, the PlayStation Portal can now stream games from the PlayStation Plus Premium cloud gaming catalog without a PS5 console. This is currently in beta. To use this cloud streaming feature, you must have: A PlayStation Portal. An active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription (this is the highest tier). A stable, high-speed internet connection. So, while the device's core purpose is to be a companion to your PS5, you can now use it as a standalone cloud streaming device if you have the proper PlayStation Plus subscription. Can you use it with a PS4? No, the PlayStation Portal is not compatible with the PlayStation 4. Sony has explicitly stated that the Portal is designed exclusively for use with the PlayStation 5. The PS4 does not have the necessary software or hardware to pair with the Portal.
